Engraved portraits of Soyer and Mrs. Soyer, additional engraved title, 13 engraved plates [3 folding], numerous text woodcuts including full-page kitchen plans. Original blind-decorated cloth, spine faded, a little worn at the ends and splitting at one side of the head, portraits and folding plates foxed, the occasional spot elsewhere but text clean, joints firm, a good copy. *Soyer (1809-1858) French born and educated, left France for London at the revolution in 1830. Following a number of appointments in aristocratic houses, he was given the position of chef at the Reform Club and on the day of the coronation of Victoria in 1838, prepared a breakfast for two thousand people. In 1847 his sympathies were aroused by the famine in Ireland and having written extensively to the papers on the subject, he was appointed by the government to oversee soup kitchens in Dublin. He did this with great economy and efficiency and published his account in 'Soyer's Charitable Cookery, or The Poor Man's Regenerator', giving part of the profits to charity. On the basis of this experience, he went at his own expense to the Crimea and completely reorganised the diets and kitchens of the military hospitals and the army. He was also a creative mechanic, inventing new stoves and cooking apparatus, such as the Scutari Tea-Pot. Back in England, he gave lectures on cooking for the army and navy, designed a cooking wagon for the former and a miniature kitchen for naval vessels [illustrated and described in the above], reformed the dietary of the emigration commissioners and military hospitals and erected a model kitchen in Wellington Barracks. Despite this energy and creativity, his restaurant venture in Kensington Gore, London, opened in 1851 to coincide with the Great Exhibition, was a financial failure with debts of £7000. His English wife, Emma, whom he married in 1837, was a very successful genre painter; she died in premature labour in 1842, her portrait and eulogy are appended to the above. Both Soyers are buried in Kensal Green Cemetary.…

Exquisite drawings that serve as models for enamel vases. Contains five large and six smalle ones. The watercolour drawings chiefly portray floral motifs, executed in subtle, harmonious colours in a typical Art Nouveau style. Four of them are signed by Soyer.Maison Soyer became one of the leading enamel workshops in Paris at the end of the 19th century. In 1861, the noted French artist Paul Constant Soyer established a workshop specialising in a range of enamelling techniques, with a particular focus on painted enamel. In 1889, his son Théophile took over the family business with his wife Lucie Dejoux, herself an accomplished enamel artist. These drawings are stylistically consistent with works in the collection of Musée d'Orsay and were included in the museum's exhibition "Soyer, a Lineage of Parisian Enamellers" in 2023.Paul Soyer, worked as a chaser in Paris from the 1950s and opened a workshop as an engraver-enameller in 1861 and then collaborated with renowned enamelers and goldsmiths, such as Claudius Popelin, whose pupil he was, Charles Duron and Gustave Baugrand. Following this success, he opened a larger workshop and specialized in various enamel techniques, with a preference for painted enamel. He participated in all the French and foreign Universal Expositions. He was regularly rewarded. In 1889 the son Théophile took over the family business with his wife Lucie Dejoux, who was an enameler herself. Paul Constant Soyer was a significant French painter of domestic genre scenes, still lifes, and portraits.he learned the technique of enamel to replace ornamental bronzes in furniture decoration. The Soyer family specialized in the art of painted enamels and distinguished itself for half a century in a variety of styles, from Neo-Renaissance to Art Nouveau. Musée d?Orsay?s collection of preparatory drawings provides an overview of this family of Parisian enamelers? creative process and body of work.The exhibition comprises a selection of preparatory drawings that bear witness to the Soyers? inventiveness and ability to adapt to the taste of their day. Up until 1914, they remained faithful to historicism while developing a range of Art Nouveau products inspired by nature and female figures.
