2pp, 12mo. Bifolium, endorsed 'Clarke' on reverse of second leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded three times. The letter begins: 'My dear Webster, | Charles Kean has requested me to give him information respecting Theatres in England, in which it is probable he may form engagements on his return from America, a…s he wishes his plans to be arranged if possible previous to his departure from the United States, so as he may see his way clearly on his arrival in England.' He asks whether it would answer Webster's purpose 'to make any proposal to him'. Kean's 'new Play by Lovel [i.e. George William Lovell], the Wife's Secret, is effective I understand and the Play was written for Kean and Mrs. Kean, but the latter I learn is the feature.' Clarke will write to Kean 'in a few days and I shall have much pleasure in making any communication to him you may wish. His list of parts as well as Mrs. Keans is considerably extended sicne their marriage and you can best judge whether this fact may have attraction.' Clarke trusts that 'the Haymarket with its twin sister, the Adelphi are prospering', and his wife joins with him 'in best regards to the Managers of each establishment'. He ends with 'the Season's Compliments', and in a postscript thanks him 'for the Observers you send me'. In the event the Keans made a highly successful return to the Haymarket.

See his entry in the Dictionary of Irish Biography, and his father's entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. 72 lines, closely written. In good condition, lightly aged and folded for postage. Addressed to 'My dear Sir Henry' and signed 'Joseph D'Arcy Sirr'. In response to an invitation to write, there are 'two or three poi…nts' on which Sirr would seek information. These relate to what appears to be a mistake by 'Mr Davy' on publishing a manuscript regarding 'Lady C. Grey' who is buried at Yoxford. He is also 'enclosing [not present] a curious copy of a MS made for me, but wh. needs to be compared, signed Wm. Barlow'. Sirr suspects he may have been a previous incumbent, but asks the recipient if he is able to identify him. There are references to 'Mr Petre', 'Lauwrence Echard Vicar of this Parish from 1625 to 1646', Becles, 'Sir Robt. Brooke', 'Sir Humphrey Weld Ld May[o]r of London'.

The letter and reply are on the same 12mo bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: Pryme to Moran. 3pp., 12mo. He writes that Jerdan has referred him to Moran 'for inquiry respecting him'. He is satisfied with Jerdan's account, but as he is 'a stranger to me & I am acting for others as well as myself I wish to as…k whether in your opinion we may place reliance upon him in every respect as to his making out from the Books & adjusting some complicated accounts of a Provincial Newspaper & some disputed balances thereon'. TWO: Moran's reply to Pryme. 1p., 12mo, on the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium. Not a draft. He is 'not aware of Mr Jerdan's proficiency in the particular class of accounts' referred to by Pryme, but he does not 'think him capable of undertaking any thing which he could not perform satisfactorily. When he was a Candidate for the Secretaryship of the Literary Fund Society he had my vote & active aid as one of the Committee of that Corporation: & I would if called on readily renew my efforts in his behalf.' Jerdan's father was the editor of the Literary Gazette. Pryme's lectures on political economy at Cambridge were the first on the subject at any British university.

All three items good, on lightly-aged paper. All bifoliums. Letter One (1 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 42 lines. He is pleased to have received Childers' life of his father (published that year). 'I knew your Father well, [.] I was in the House in the Parliaments of 68 & 80 when he had his most serious work'. Praises his 'amazing plu…ck in going out as he did to Australia [Childers was first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne] & in his conduct there in the early days & during the gold discoveries time, the story of which in his letters is very curious'. He is interested to learn that he 'had Jewish blood in his veins'. He finds it 'evident that he was very doubtful as to Gladstone's wisdom on several points & in that I agree with him'. He believes that, though 'most anxious to help Ireland', he was not 'really happy about Home Rule', wanting to 'separate the Imperial from the Local', which 'could not be done'. Ends: 'Where should we have been in 99, if we had given Ireland over to an Irish Parlmt in 93?' Letter Two (4 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 33 lines. Having received Childers' reply, he is pleased he wrote. Childers' 'Jewish blood' is 'very interesting to me'. Praises Disraeli's comments on the subject in his biography of Lord George Bentinck - 'a most interesting book & written by a most remarkable specimen of that famous nation'. Attacks Gladstone's handling of the Home Rule question. The recipient is 'right that Gladstone acted in a hurry [.] but he did more - He broke faith with his old friends to whom in Septr 1885 he sent a message utterly opposed to the plans which he developed, even before the Election of that year. He was not straight & he had his reward. And he destroyed the Liberal party. - Where is it now?' Letter Three (8 July 1901): 12mo, 3 pp. 31 lines. He thanks him for 'the Copy of that very remarkable letter - It does the Father credit'. Until the recent case of 'Mr J. E. Backhouse of Darlington' he had 'never heard before of a boy being made a Baronet'. He does not 'altogether agree with your history as to 79-80 - I remember well saying after that terrible Afghan disaster, at end of 79, that it would finish the Govmt - that & the Zulu war were too much for the Electors.'.

1 page, 3 Torrington Square, Wednesday 23 June Kean writes to an unknown recipient to organise a meeting with them "here at eleven o'clock on Saturday morning next". Charles Kean, famed 19th century actor and one-half of the popular acting couple Mr and Mrs Kean (his wife Ellen, nee Tree) was enjoying a period of particular suc…cess and favour at the time this letter was written. In 1848 he became director of royal theatricals at Windsor, and from 1850 he co-managed the Princess's Theatre on Oxford Street with Robert Keeley. In 1852 he began managing that theatre alone, his first solo production was that of King John in February of that year (his first great historical production - the first of many!) The play being shown at the Princess's Theatre at the time of this letter was The Vampire by Dion Boucicault (later titled The Phantom), which premiered on 14 June 1852.
