Ernest Newman was undoubtedly the most notable music critic of his generation; he was famous both for the clarity of his musical perception and for the beauty of his English style. Born in Liverpool on Novem ber 30th, 1868, he started adult life as a businessman, but soon found time to write books on music. His entry into journalism was not until his late thirties, when he became critic on the Manchester Guardian for a year. From there he went to the Birmingham Post, where he stayed until after the first world war, when he came to London. After a year on the Observer, he joined the Sunday Times and remained there until he retired. He died in 1959 at the age of 90. He wrote many books; his special knowledge lay in the century from Berlioz to Richard Strauss, centred on Wagner, but his studies of the classics took him back to Bach and Gluck, as well as to Beethoven. As in all his work, this book is dominated by the freshness of his ideas and of his approach to conventional shibboleths. Even today it will open the eyes of many readers to aspects of Beethoven, both as a man and as a musician, that have been overlaid by the romantic hero- worship that has surrounded the composer since Victorian times. In the first half of the book, Newman shows him to us as a man who suffered in all his relationships as a result of his too-human failings. In the second half, the familiar portrait of Beethoven, the inspired composer, is most interestingly treated. The popular misconception of "musical composition by divine revelation" is approached by way of a masterly comparison between the Eroica symphony first movement, and the early workings that appear in Beethoven's sketchbooks. But Newman also shows that hidden away in many of the composer's melodies there are certain fingerprints that are found again and again; and it is here, he argues, that the unconscious in composition manifests itself. The analysis of only one such fingerprint opens the reader's mind to a new dimension in familiar music. Although the book was first published in 1927, it strikes today's reader as being fresh and modern in outlook; and Beethoven is seen realistically both as a human being and as a craftsman through the understanding with which Newman presents him. 9780575001671 ISBN 0575001674.
