Illustrated with 9 numbered engraved plates, a large folding map of Haiti, a large folding plan of "Kaap François" (Cap-Haïtien), and a facsimile of a 3-page letter from Toussaint Louverture to Edward Tyrell Smith. (illustrator). First Dutch edition. Illustrated with 9 numbered engraved plates, a large folding map of Haiti, a large folding plan of "Kaap François" (Cap-Haïtien), and a facsimile of a 3-page letter from Toussaint Louverture to Edward Tyrell Smith. First Dutch edition. 2 volumes in contemporary stiffened paper wrappers with printed spine vignettes (rubbed and chipped). XXVIII [= XXVI], 410, [2]; VIII, 416 pp. 8 plates, 2 folding maps, a copy of a 3-page letter. First Dutch edition of Rainsford's richly illustrated account-one of the earliest and most sympathetic European portrayals of the Haitian Revolution and the leadership of Toussaint Louverture. First Dutch edition of Marcus Rainsford's influential eyewitness account of the Haitian Revolution, originally published in London in 1805. Rainsford (c.1750-1817), an Irish-born British army officer, visited Saint-Domingue in 1799 during a turbulent phase of the revolution. Arrested and sentenced to death as a suspected spy, he was ultimately pardoned by Toussaint Louverture-a pivotal moment that shaped his sympathetic view of the Haitian leader. Rainsford's work stands among the earliest and most detailed European narratives to present the Haitian Revolution as a justified struggle for human rights and liberation. This edition is extensively illustrated with engravings after drawings attributed to Rainsford. Among them are portraits of Louverture and other Haitian commanders, depictions of military engagements, and scenes of violence attributed to French forces. The volume also includes two large folding plates: a detailed map of the island of Saint-Domingue and a city plan of Cap-Haïtien, showing its fortifications and harbor. A three-page facsimile of a manuscript letter from Louverture to British merchant Edward Tyrell Smith adds an unusual and historically valuable documentary element. The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) was the only successful slave uprising in world history, leading to the abolition of slavery and the establishment of Haiti as the first Black republic and the second independent state in the Western Hemisphere after the United States. Rainsford's account offers critical documentation of the revolution's military, social, and moral dimensions, and remains a key primary source for the study of abolition, colonialism, and Black political agency in the Atlantic world. Palau 246395; Sabin 67531 (noting only 10 plates); Muller, America p.57. . Untrimmed and internally clean; overall in very good condition. 2 volumes in contemporary stiffened paper wrappers with printed spine vignettes (rubbed and chipped).
