The second French edition (first 1791) of this classic on dyeing prepared with the assistance of the au thor s son, enlarged by a section on bleaching with chlorine. Amédé Barthélemy, worked in a small lab oratory at Oberkampf s cotton printing factory in Jouy-en-Josas which gave him first-hand experience in dye substances, textiles and chemistry. The first volume contains chapters on the theory of colours and their distinctive properties, mordants, acids, the differences between wool, silk, cotton, linen and hemp, bleaching, washing, the different processes of dyeing and their chemical agents; the second volume comprises observations on dyeing in various colours, their properties, the fast colours indigo and madder together with a discussion of natural and chemically produced colours.
