Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, some discoloration in gutters both front and rear, faint bookseller's rubber-stamp (Bertrand Smith Acres of Books) on front pastedown; jacket a bit age-toned along spine, light soiling to rear panel, tiny chips at spine ends]. "A frank study of human…evil" (Mark Van Doren, quoted in the jacket blurb), this novel is set in a small English village that's dominated by its 74-year-old overlord and his depraved family. The Irish author spent 13 years in prison after having had his death sentence (for his involvement in a post office robbery during the Irish Civil War) commuted at the last minute, and wrote a number of books about prison life and the criminal underworld. This book, oddly, appears to have not been published in either England or Ireland, although the author lived for most of his post-prison life in London. Reportedly, Phelan's stylistic influence in crafting this tale of rural English horror was Henry James's "The Turn of the Screw.". Illustrated by (dj design) Georg Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy but a bit shelfworn, with light bumping at most corners and a teensy exposure of boards at several, light/faint staining to the front cover, and a slightly turned spine]. First novel by this author/screenwriter (later one of the blacklisted "Holly…wood Ten").Subtitled "An Historical Novel of a Moment in the American Winter," it deals with the attempted unionization of automobile workers by the CIO in 1936. Critic/historian Bernard Dick called the novel "an authentic account of the American Communist Party's infiltration of closed-shop companies to unionize the workers and recruit more minorities." (The author, of course, was himself a Party member, so undoubtedly knew wherefrom he wrote.) Walter Rideout [The Radical Novel in the United States 1900-1954] cites the novel as "historically important because it initiated the whole series of books chiefly concerned with an examination of the Communist's personality and faith or with a depiction of his life as the only fully admirable mode of existence available in the United States today.". Illustrated by (dj) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition. [a very nice copy, with just a touch of wear to the base of the spine, vintage bookseller's label (The Village Book Shop, Carmel, Calif.) on rear pastedown; the jacket is equally nice, just lightly age-toned, with a touch of wear at the corners]. "Only a few miles from…over-publicized Bali in the South Seas is the Dutch colony of Java, a colorful island teeming with a population of almost forty million people. [The author] came to this island as a casual visitor. He was fascinated, and before long learned to love it -- loved it so much that he stayed and was impelled to write a rich and tender novel about it. Into the story of Ajoks, the almost fabulous youth with the soul of a great artist who reaches heights that few of his race have ever attained, Fowler has woven much of the strange and beautiful folklore of the Javanese people.". Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [boards very slightly bowed outwards, tiny shallow dent in top of front cover; jacket has one tiny chip at top of front panel, very slight paper loss at top of spine, light soiling to rear panel]. The Alabama-born author's second (and apparently last) book, "essential…ly a novel about Johnny Somers, a frightened young man who suddenly finds himself in a strange world of baffling mazes and tortuous paths; and yet, even more starkly real, it is the heart-breaking story of the pitiable, likable people of a small Southern town." If that jacket-blurb quote seems a little oblique, it didn't prevent the New York Times reviewer from sussing out the real subject of the novel: "Sex is the catalyst in this story of a small Southern town, its small Southern inhabitants, and the small young man who comes to teach history to its high school students. It is by way of sex that the contributing characters are presented and fathomed, that wrongs are righted, revenges taken, and maturity attained, and that the central drama develops. The total effect is roughly that of a detective story of sex -- pace fast, dialogue thin-lipped, and plenty of suspects." Gibbons had received the publisher's "Fellowship in Fiction" award in 1942; his first novel, "Bright is the Morning," was published the following year. After this one appeared, he seems to have faded off the literary scene. Illustrated by (dj design) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [some shelfwear to bottom edges of covers, otherwise a good sound copy with minimal wear, one-time owner's signature at top of front endpaper; the jacket is browned and the spine and along the inner edges, and has some very shallow chipping at the spine ends, but still… presents very well in new mylar]. The author's fourth published novel (at least under the Longstreet name; he used several others), and his stab at a big, fat, "important" political novel, about "an upstanding young American who, at the book's close [spoiler alert!], is named for president of the United States by such a wave of popular acclaim as clinched the Republican nomination for Mr. Willkie in 1940." (An odd sort of link to make, given that Willkie was pretty soundly defeated by FDR in that election.) In other words, it's "All the King's Men" with a good guy, instead of a scoundrel, at its center. (One of the influential characters in the protagonist's rise is a "Farley-esque political manipulator" by the name of Ned Wonderly, which makes one wonder if Longstreet had seen THE MALTESE FALCON, with Mary Astor as the conniving "Miss Wonderly.") The novel is a sweeping affair, all right, encompassing both World Wars, the Prohibition Era, and the Great Depression, and it's big, too, at 434 pages. As far as its being important, though -- well, it wasn't considered important enough by Gordon Milne for inclusion in his 1966 study "The American Political Novel," and Hanna (2233) didn't even acknowledge its manifest political element, describing it only as a "panoramic view of life in an American steel city from World War I to World War II." ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this thick and heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good dj. 13th printing. [minimal shelfwear, slight discoloration to gutters; the jacket is modestly edgeworn and lightly scuffed, with a 1.5-inch closed tear at the top right corner of the front panel, teensy bits of paper loss at the spine ends]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the fron…t endpaper: "To Rosemary King -- / with all good wishes / Paul Gallico." Gallico's "simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war" (Wikipedia), is about the titular bird, wounded by a gunshot, who is nursed back to health by a disabled artist and a young local Essex girl, and culminates in the artist's heroic act of self-sacrifice during the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk. First published as a short story in The Saturday Evening Post in 1940, it was expanded somewhat for its publication in book form. It's been recorded numerous times (including several musical adaptations) and was filmed for BBC-TV in 1971 with Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter. In more recent times it's been acknowledged by author Michael Morpurgo as an influence on his novel "War Horse," which was in turn the basis for a wildly successful theatrical play. Signed by Author. Illustrated by (dj art) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. DETAILS NEEDED. The author's second novel, "the story of the boy next door, the one everybody thought was too young to get married, too callow to go to war. In this book the reader becomes one with that boy, lives and grows with him, understands him completely." The N…ew York Times reviewer called it "an honest novel, written with a sensitivity for incident," but also felt that it was "more often a weary chronicle of a dull life that never gains the stature to justify its chronicling." Be that as it may, copies are scarce in the marketplace, which always suggests to me that the book has, over time, touched enough readers to have created a bit of a following -- or maybe it's just being collected for the beautiful George Salter dust jacket design, of which this is a very nice example. Illustrated by (dj) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [nice clean copy, minimal shelfwear to book; jacket shows just a touch of edgewear, tiny chip at top of spine, small scratch mid-spine]. Novel set in the Japanese-occuped Philippines during World War II. "In this powerful, fast-moving novel of the Philippines, from Pea…rl Harbor to the return of the Americans, [the author] has dealt with a whole society, created a world in a fashion achieved by few American novelists. [The narrative involves] battles, love affairs, torture chambers, orgies, political machinations, [and] marches through the jungle -- each of these reflect[ing] in one way or another the central struggle in the Philippines and the basic conflict that attends the human condition." Appel had gathered background information for this book while stationed in the Philippines as a special assistant to the U.S. High Commissioner immediately after the end of the war. The book later served as the basis for the 1963 film CRY OF BATTLE, directed by Irving Lerner and starring Van Heflin and Rita Moreno. (Somebody once called Appel "the best hard-boiled writer you've never heard of" -- oh, wait, that somebody was me.). Illustrated by (dj design) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition. [nice clean book with minimal wear; jacket also quite nice, with just one teeny-tiny chip at top of front panel]. "A human, touching story told with delicacy and warmth of two women to whom the little things of life assumed tremendous importance. This charming novel, as… it follows Penelope and Charlotte through the years in their eternal quest for husbands, gives a cutting yet endearing picture of two frustrated lives." The Chicago Tribune critic thought the novel "might well be called the definitive study in frustration." (But "charming" and "endearing" would seem to be some optimistic blurb-writer's spin; the most frequent term used by reviewers to describe the sisters' relationship is "hatred.") The book won an Avery Hopwood Award at the University of Michigan, but it didn't launch much of a career for Fynette Rowe, who wrote just one more novel after this one, "The Burning Spring," published in 1947. Illustrated by (dj design) George Salter (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. Fair dj. First Edition. [a well-used copy, with both the jacket and (to a lesser degree) the book showing the after-effects from a previous owner's (or owners') well-intentioned but misguided attempts to "preserve" it; the book itself is shelfworn and bumped at the lower extremities, with a slightly tu…rned spine, and a bit of staining along the top and bottom edges of both endpapers; the jacket, however, is a bit of a mess, having been backed with brown paper, variously reinforced with tape (some still there, some gone but with evidentiary stains), and worst of all, encased in one of those awful old-time jacket "protectors" which inevitably leave behind pieces of itself, notably strips of its edge-binding affixed to the top and bottom edges of the jacket; I've done my best to remove or at least ameliorate the worst of these depredations, but there's only so much that can reasonably be done; in the end, the best that can be said is that it's a reasonably intact example of a fairly rare jacket]. Uncommon novel by a California author better known as a playwright and occasional screenwriter. Set along the California coast in the Big Sur region, the story revolves around a rural girl who becomes pregnant by a convict working on a road gang; he subsequently kills a foreman, and the two flee into the wilderness. Filmed quite effectively by Jean Negulesco for Warner Bros. in 1947, with Ida Lupino and Dane Clark as the doomed lovers. (Baird & Greenwood 2428). Illustrated by (dj) George Salter (illustrator).
