"A frank study of human evil" (Mark Van Doren, quoted in the jacket blurb), this novel is set in a small English village that's dominated by its 74-year-old overlord and his depraved family. The Irish author spent 13 years in prison after having had his death sentence (for his involvement in a post office robbery during the Irish Civil War) commuted at the last minute, and wrote a number of books about prison life and the criminal underworld. This book, oddly, appears to have not been published in either England or Ireland, although the author lived for most of his post-prison life in London. First edition. viii, 298pp. James Leo Phelan (1895-1966) was an Irish writer, political activist and tramp who wrote several books on tramp life and prison life. In the period of the Irish Civil War Phelan took part in a post office robbery in Bootle, Merseyside alongside Sean McAteer, during which a killing took place; although the judge agreed that Phelan did not commit the act, he was legally culpable simply by virtue of having been involved and present at the robbery. He was sentenced to death by hanging and sent to Manchester Prison. On the eve of his execution in 1924, the Home Secretary commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. He remained in prison for another 13 years before he was released. In this autobiography he writes of the early part of his life, up to the commutation of his sentence. The book is bound in the original grey-blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining to the boards. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the free endpapers and there is a neat inscription dated 1951 on the front free endpaper.…
