Owen is mentioned in the author's note to this volume: 'I have also to thank Commander J. H. Owen for having carefully indexed this Volume and for having helped to correct the proofs'. Owen has added occasional further very neat corrections to this volume in pencil. Owen had entered the Royal Navy in 1907 as a Midshipman at the age of 15. He became a Submarine Commander during WWI operating in the North Sea and with the Italians in the Adriatic against the Austrians from 1916-1918. His papers are held in Cambridge University and include much correspondence from Keyes and indeed from Winston Churchill as at this time he was working as a Naval Historical Adviser to him. Binding nice and tight and bright with only very slight creasing. Pages and plates very nice and clean with only very slight foxing. A near fine, tight, bright, clean copy. An important association copy and a very nice copy indeed. Scarce thus. Signed by Author(s).

Filled with illustrations and topical advertisements for everything from corsetry to bicycles, from a full-page one on the inside front cover for 'Brickwoods Jubilee Brew / 4d. per Small Bottle in Public Bars', to one on the back cover reading 'On Review / United Ales & Stout Are Supreme'. First article is 'Britain's Dependence On Sea Power / A Review Foreword / By / Admiral of the Fleet Sir Roger Keyes, Bart., / G.C.B., K.C.V.O., C.M.G., D.S.O., LL.D., M.P. for Portsmouth North, and a former Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth.' Among many other articles are 'Warship Design in our Sailor King's Reign / Dreadnought Types - Good Looking and Ungainly Ships - Greater Armament Efficiency' by Frank C. Bowen, and the poem 'Semper Fidelis' by Evelyn H. Healey. Central 'Admiralty Plan of Ships at Spithead'.

Zustand: Good. Als and TLS 2pp. Letter to Lady Allenby regarding his forthcoming book (14 years later) on King Leopold of Belgium. Sir Roger requests certain documents to show to the King."Written by the son of Admiral Keyes who was the liaison of the British to King Leopold III during the 18 day campaign in May 1940. He exposes how King Leopold was forced to abandon well prepared defensive positions out of solidarity with the allies (British and French) and how the Belgian Army was sacrificed by the British to safe the Expeditionary Corps. The British made the decision and prepared to evacuate long before telling their Allies. Then blamed the King for allegedly surrendering without notifying the Allies and forcing the retreat. The King was used as a scapegoat by Churchill and especially the French to justify their miserable performance. History was never set right on this except for this book. Read it and you will have a totally different view why the Germans were so successful in 1940. ".
