Willcocks entered the army in 1878, serv…ed in the Afghan War, the Sudan, Burma, and on the Indian Frontier, and became commandant of the West African Frontier Force in 1898. For his exploits in leading the expedition to the relief of Kumasi, he was knighted, and in 1914 he was chosen to command the Indian Corps on the Western Front, 1914-15. Governor of Bermuda, 1917-22, he was made a General in 1915. US$37.

First and limited edition, number 102 of 150 copies signed on behalf of the publishers. This edition printed on large, thick paper contains eight photogravure portraits of Indian officers who served during the conflict and one of Willcocks. These are not present in the trade edition. "Willcocks reached the zenith of his career w…hen, in 1914, he was ordered to France in command of the Indian army corps. Everything pointed to his ultimate appointment as commander-in-chief in India. But it did not happen. Although Willcocks was awarded the GCMG in 1915, friction developed between him and Sir Douglas Haig, formerly junior to him, who had been promoted general in November 1914 and became commander of the newly formed First Army at the beginning of 1915" (ODNB). The Indian Expeditionary Force under Willcocks faced particular difficulties on the Western Front, exacerbated by a lack of familiarity with the weaponry, limited artillery, language barriers, and lack of preparation for the climate. Morale was low and many soldiers fled the battles, leading to a poor reputation for Indians in the war overall. Willcocks wrote this volume to provide a counter-perspective: "So erroneous are many of the opinions and so ill-natured have been some of the criticisms of the part taken by the Indian Corps in Flanders, that it has been impracticable to avoid writing strongly when I considered it necessary, and hence I have not hesitated to do so" (p. xix). Original red cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt, front board gilt-stamped with central design and single fillet, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Binding sunned and slightly marked, spine ends a little bumped, endpapers foxed, plates bright: a very good copy.
