Illustrated from his letters with occasional notes and narrative by John, Lord Sheffield. With memoirs of his life and writings, composed by himself. Illustrated with an silhouette portrait frontispiece to Volume I and an engraved frontispiece to Volume III. Some of the works are written in French. Shortly following Gibbon's death, his good friend and literary executor, John Lord Sheffield undertook to edit and in 1796 published the first of the Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon in order that the reading public have an opportunity to gain a broader insight into the historian and his overall body of work. Edward Gibbon (1737 - 1794) was an English historian and Member of Parliament. His most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.With an ink inscription of J. Harlow. Bound in full calf. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the extremities and joints, causing some loss to the extremities of boards and spine. Joints are cracked but hinges remain firm due to internal reinforcements. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to title page and a few marks. This work contains 'Account and Anecdotes of His Family', 'The Author's Account of the B…ooks He Read, and of the Course of Study He Pursued', 'The Author's Manner of Passing His Time in the Hampshire Militia', 'Mr Gibbon Makes the Tour of Switzerland', and more. Also containing over two hundred letters written to a variety of correspondence, including Mr Gesner, Mrs Porten, Mr Holroyd, Dr. Watson, Dr Priestley, and more. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Edward Gibbons was a historian and Member of Parliament, his poor health was consistently under threat during his childhood, which led to him becoming widely read. He never married, after a failed love affair with Suzanne Curchod in his youth, Suzanne later became the wife to Jacques Necker, and her daughter was the noted socialite and letter writer, Madame de Stael. His first historical endeavour was a "History of Switzerland", which was never finished or published. He also wrote about the literary and social conditions of England at the time, which was unfortunately considered a flop. With annotations and notes by John Lord Sheffield. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. A little light rubbing to the boards and joints, a little heavier to the rear board. Light fading and discoloration to the spine. Very minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some spots to the first few pages only.
