In den WarenkorbHardcover. Large 8vo., (10 x 6 4/8 inches). Original blue cloth gilt. Compiled from the "correspondence of my father, Commodore Conner, both official and private, together with governmental and executive documents". "At the time when hostilities commenced between Mexico and the United States, the former had no navy on the high s…eas, and the latter none fitted to prosecute warfare in the enemy's waters. In consequence of this the war was without any strictly naval conflicts. But the want of proper vessels in the American navy was not generally known, and consequently dissatisfaction was felt at the presumed lack of enterprise of the squadron in the Gulf of Mexico, and a portion of the press did not hesitate to censure the same, together with the commander of that force. Commodore Conner, [meanwhile] in the Gulf, was manfully bearing up against the many combined difficulties assigned to him." (page 3). Despite these difficulties, Conner led a brave and ultimately victorious amphibious assault on Veracruz.

'I am sorry that we have missed each other on the occasions you have called. My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M. on Sunday, when, if you can manage to call once more, I shall be d…elighted to see you & revive our mutual recollections of old days.' According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB, 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter, he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.'.

In den Warenkorb4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Docketed on reverse of second leaf: '15 Augt. 1815. | Sir P. C. Durham'. According to the DNB, Durham, having 'cleared the West Indies of American cruisers', 'in June and August 1815 co-operated in the reduction of Martinique and Guadeloupe, at which place…the last French flag was struck to Durham, as the first had been'. The letter begins: 'My Lord | I feel no exertion has been wanting on the part of the Navy in the joint capture of Guadeloupe and did flatter myself had given his Nephew the best Situation, and provided for most of his friends the admiral might have been offered something but to my surprize on my return from Pointe a Pitre in the , where I had been in the Public Service, all was disposed of it has been generally (in point of Captures) the practice to give the admiral the nomanation [sic] of the Naval officer, which is all I request for my Nephew Mr Thomas Calderwood Durham [(1797-1842)] and have requested Lord Bathurst would be pleased to give it to him may I hope for your Lordships support'. He complains that in the meantime 'it has been given to Mr King a Gentleman well known to hae thought, and acted in opposition to Government which is not paying the Navy nor Army any compliment for their exertions in this Country.'.

In den WarenkorbVery good. Light wear and toning along original fold lines. Else excellent with no mends and virtually no wear at folds. In original printed slipcase. Size 34 x 43.75 Inches. This is a 1956 Frank A. de Vine Hunt and George Philip map of Winston Churchill's travels as Prime Minister between June 1940 and July 1945. A Closer Look…Colorful, numerically identified lines trace nineteen trips by air, sea, road, and rail to the United States, North Africa, continental Europe, the Middle East, and Russia. Colors represent different years: yellow for August 1941 through August 1942, green for August 1942 through August 1943, red for August 1943 through August 1944, and blue for August 1944 through August 1945. Among the more recognizable excursions are those to sign the Atlantic Charter, three trips Washington, D.C. for 'Washington Conferences', trips to the Cairo Conference, Teheran Conference, and the Yalta Conference, and visits to the Normandy Beachhead. Information concerning the trips appears in a legend situated at bottom center, with destinations, stops, and dates provided. Illustrations of warships and airplanes used to transport the Prime Minister encircle the legend and depict the Atlantic Charter meeting. Publication History and Census This map was designed by Frank A. de Vine Hunt and originally published by George Philip and Sons and the London Geographical Institute. The present example was published in April 1956 for World Book members to 'commemorate the completion of publication of the Reprint Society edition of the Churchill War Memoirs'. We note eight examples cataloged in OCLC, at the Osher Map Library at the University of Southern Maine, the University of Virginia, the University of Toronto, the University of South Carolina, the University of Texas at Austin, the National Library of Australia, the State Library of Queensland, and the State Library of South Australia.
