Paperback. Zustand: Good. A nice copy of John Selden's work, published posthumously, with two pages of publishers ads to the rear and copy of original title page. Part of the 'English Reprint' series. John Selden (December 16, 1584 November 30, 1654) was an English jurist, legal antiquary and oriental scholar. It was, however, as a scholar and writer that Selden won his reputation. His first work, an account of the civil administration of England before the Norman Conquest, is said to have been completed when he was only twenty-two or twenty-three. Several of Selden's minor works were published posthoumously, of which Tale Talk is perhaps his best known. Edited by the literary scholar Edward Arber, who is known for his contributions to the 'English Reprint' series. This series, created in the 19th century, aimed to produce accurate reprints of notable works, making them easily accessible to the general public. In a quarter cloth binding, with original paper boards. Externally, sound. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. The off mark to the front and rear boards. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, though the title pages and the odd page loosening slightly. Pages are bright and clean, with no apparent marks. Good. None (illustrator). book.…

Includes a 48-page Life of the authors by the jurist John Selden (1584-1654). The 84-page glossary of terms by the Anglo-Saxon scholar William Somner (1598-1669) predates his important Saxon-Latin-English lexicon of 1659. There is a variant title-page which states that the edition was sold by Jan and Daniel Elzevier in Leiden. ESTC R005810; Wing H 2094.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. WITH ANGLO-SAXON EDITIO PRINCEPS. Folio. pp. [8], XVI, 218, lacking first and last blank. Roman letter, with Italic, some Anglo-Saxon. Title in red and black, one half-page and one small woodcut medieval seal, decorated initials and ornaments. Slight age browning to first two and last gatherings, very minor marginal foxing. A very good, clean copy in contemporary French polished calf, ancient reback, original spine remounted, double gilt ruled, gilt arms of Jean-Paul II de Montchal to covers, raised bands, spine gilt ruled and gilt-lettered, a.e.r., corners worn, few minor marks to covers. C19 autograph of John Brewer, Oxford, to pastedown, C20 inked ex-libris of N.H. MacMichael, keeper of muniments at Westminster Abbey, to ffep (detached), C19 'A.[ugustus] Jessopp D.D. Schol: Reg: (?)' and scattered C20 pencilled notes, two loose paper slips with C19 and later bibliographical ms annotations. Elegant copy of the editio princeps of this important medieval history of England, edited by the English antiquary and jurist John Selden - 'central to historians' accounts of the English state under the Norman kings and its relations to "the church"' (Maddicott, p.95). Together with those of Florence of Worcester and William of Malmesbury, Eadmer's work stands as one of the major medieval English histories. Eadmer (1060-1126) was an English monk based at the Benedictine Abbey of Christ Church, in Canterbury. There he met St Anselm, and became his secretary and closest companion, and composed influential theological (e.g., on the Immaculate Conception) and historical works. 'Historia' deals with the history of England in 1066-1122, from William the Conqueror to Henry I. The ms was unearthed by Selden (1584-1654) in Robert Cotton's library, and here provided with a long philological, historical and methodological preface (including Eadmer's biography and the sources consulted), copious glosses and commentaries. The 'Historia' begins from the last Anglo-Saxon kings - Edgar, Ethelred, Edward the Confessor, Harold. Interspersed with royal history is that of the English bishops; in particular, Eadmer upheld the pre-eminence of Canterbury over York, as episcopal seat. A long section on St Anselm during his years at Canterbury is also his first official public 'portrait' written by someone who knew him, together with Eadmer's separate, and more private, 'Vita Anselmi'. Selden's notes appear in a separate appendix, with a selection ('Spicilegium') of historical information and excerpts from documents. E.g., the beginning (pp.145-54) of a document addressed to King Edgar on behalf of English Benedictine monks and nuns, here printed in the Anglo-Saxon and Latin. The laws granted by William the Conqueror to the English are also reproduced, in Latin and Norman French. A most interesting and important work. Jean-Pierre II de Montchal (1652-98), 'seigneur de Noyen et Grisy', counsellor at the Parliament of Paris, was likely a discerning bibliophile, as several finely-bound books survive with his charming gilt supralibros. A. Jessopp was probably Augustus (1823-1914), English clergyman and schoolmaster in Norfolk, author of historical essays and friend to the writer M.R. James. ESTC S121437 (one of two variants, priority not established); STC 7438. J. Maddicott, Medieval State (2000). Not in Lowndes.…

Holdsworth regards Selden "as the first scientific historian of English law" and goes on to say that "his great intellectual qualities justify us in regarding him both as the pioneer of the select band of English legal historians, and one of the most eminent of its representatives." Tracts is one of his principal works as a legal historian. The first two tracts, Jani Anglorum and England's Epinomis, discuss the development of the common law and the English constitution through Magna Carta. This copy belonged to two eighteenth-century barristers. Like Charles Cotes [d. 1744], Wriothesly Digby [bef. 1697-bef. 1767] was a barrister of the Middle Temple. Cotes was admitted in 1706, Digby in 1716/7. Digby, from a notable Anglo-Irish family, was the son and grandson of lawyers. Honourable Society of the Middle Te. London 1683 1st ed. (illustrator). …

Contemporary full vellum with Yapp edges, manuscript title in sepia ink to spine, later paper label with location details (?). The first edition of the first book printed in England to make extensive use of Arabic type. ' . it can be considered as the first Arabic book to be printed in England.' (Geoffrey Roper). Eutychius of Alexandria (877 - 940), i.e. Sa'id Ibn Batriq, was a doctor, appointed Melkite Patriarch of Alexandria in 932 and one of the first Christian Egyptian authors to write extensively in Arabic. His most important work was the 'Nazm al-Jawhar' (the Row of Jewels) and it is an excerpt from that work that is presented here. This critical edition, presented in the original Arabic and with a Latin translation together with extensive analytic commentary, was prepared by John Selden (1584 - 1654), the remarkable polyglot academic (he was competent in, or at least familiar with, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Chaldean, Samaritan, Aramaic, Farsi, Ge'ez, Old English, German, French, Spanish and Italian), antiquarian, historian, jurist and parliamentarian (he had long served as an MP and in different constituencies but at the time of publication was one of the two MPs representing Oxford University in the Long Parliament). Selden's selection from Eutychius' text treats of the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the early Christian church while his extensive commentary in Latin with additional extensive quotation from a variety of Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin sources includes a list in Arabic of the first 307 Alexandrian Patriarchs. Selden's preface gives details of Eutychius and his life and medical practise, surveys Arabic manuscripts in Europe - he mentions scholars such as Erpenius - and relates how he purchased the manuscript he relied on for this edition from William Corderoy. Corderoy, like his fellow merchant Richard Hill, both merchants of the Levantine Company at Aleppo, were often the source of books for scholars; Edward Pococke, a friend and protegée of Selden's, procured the Gospels in Farsi for the English Polyglot through the pair. Pococke, the first Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford, was also responsible for another edition of Eutychius printed in 1656 by Henry Hall and paid for by Selden who did not live to see it published. Although Arabic type had been used prior to Selden's 'Eutychius' - and the earliest method had been via woodblocks inserted among metal type - it had been confined mainly to individual letters, short passages or quotations and had, at least until the mid-1630s been of very poor quality. William Stansby used Arabic metal type for the first time in England for Selden's 'Mare Clausum' (1635) and it was used again - this time by Bishop, the printer of Eutychius, who had bought Stansby's business - for the second edition of Selden's 'De Successionibus In Bona Defuncti' (1636) and his 'De Iure Naturali' (1640) but all three of these books used the type sparsely and irregularly with only the 1636 book including even a page. By the time o.…

The work by an anonymous author describes the practice of the courts, the forms of writs and an explanation of law terms as they existed during the reign of Edward I. Selden brought this ancient treatise to the public's attention and was instrumental in its publication. While Bracton earns the highest praise as the father of legal learning, Fleta earns a share of it for the illustrations he offered to some of the obscurities found in Bracton. Selden's appended dissertation (pp.453-553) contains many interesting observations about Bracton, Britton, Fleta, and Thornton "and shows what use was made of the Imperial law in England whilst the Romans governed here, at what time it was introduced into this nation, what use was formerly made of it, how long it continued, and when the use of it totally ceased in the King's Courts at Westminster": Bridgman, A Short View of Legal Bibliography 87. It is "a sort of constitutional history of England, showing much knowledge of the development of the institutions, civil and ecclesiastical, and pervaded by a strong spirit of hostility to the claims of the royal prerogative and to hierarchical pretensions" (DNB). An instant classic among Parliamentarians, it went through later editions at the politically stressful moments: 1689, the time of the Glorious Revolution, 1739, the outbreak of the War of Jenkins' Ear, and 1760, the outbreak of the Seven Years' War. This monumental treatise stands as one of the foundational texts of Whig constitutional philosophy and a fierce defense of parliamentary supremacy over the royal prerogative. This copy possesses an exceptional, interconnected provenance tracing elite military and diplomatic ownership. It bears t. London, 1739. 4th ed. (illustrator).…
