Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands, lettering piece to spine. Worn, rubbed and scuffed, corners bumped and chipped, head of spine loose. Front board nearly detached, held by cords. Contemporary previous owner's ink signature "Elizabeth Kelly" and bookplates of W.C.E. Napier and Graham Bower to front pastedown. Front endleaves loose. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, faint offsetting to margins of title page and following leaf, internally clean. $950. * First published in 1682, this work was formerly attributed to Nathaniel Bacon, who was actually the editor. It is "a sort of constitutional history of England, showing much knowledge of the development of the institutions, civil and ecclesiastical, and pervaded by a strong spirit of hostility to the claims of the royal prerogative and to hierarchical pretensions" (DNB). An instant classic among Parliamentarians, it went through later editions at the politically stressful moments: 1689, the time of the Glorious Revolution, 1739, the outbreak of the War of Jenkins' Ear, and 1760, the outbreak of the Seven Years' War. This monumental treatise stands as one of the foundational texts of Whig constitutional philosophy and a fierce defense of parliamentary supremacy over the royal prerogative.
