Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume reports the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Workshop held in Castelvecchio Pas coli, Italy, from August 28 - September 1, 1989. An important inspiration for this Workshop came from our studies in Helsinki and Denmark, which have found that exposure to an influenza epidemic during the second trimester of fetal development increases the risk of adult schizophrenia. This finding has stimulated an important new hypothesis in the study of the etiology of schizophrenia. It has suggested the possiblity that disturbances of brain development during gestation may contribute to the risk of adult schizophrenia. We determined that it would be of value to bring together schizophrenia researchers and those doing basic studies of the development of the brain. Both groups of researchers were encouraged to communicate at a level that would help other scientists to integrate their knowledge and techniques into their own discipline. For this reason, perhaps, the papers of this volume are remarkably clear and not difficult to understand. The first four chapters describe the neurochemical and structural aspects of brain development. The chapter by Dziegielewska and Saunders discusses transport mechanisms and the properties of endogenous and exogenous substances that control the internal environment of the developing brain. In the second chapter, Nowakowski reports on his studies of the develop ment of the hippocampus in mice genetically inbred to exhibit disruptions of neural migration.…

(B&W photographs and diagrams) From the Foreword, by John Osborn Polak: "In the following pages the author illustrates, describes and correlates the development, structures and functions of the human body in such a readable and accurate manner as to be understandable alike by the high-school student and the professonal aspirant who desires to review the fundamentals of the pre-clinical sciences." Per the title page, the book contains "190 original illustrations, mostly from dissections and animated drawings by the author." If you think some of the small illustrations in the book somewhat resemble motion picture film frames, you will not be surprised to learn that Dr. Sarnoff (1886-1961) was a pioneering maker of medical films, who between 1920 and 1924 produced a six-reel set of films with this same title, which was bundled with this book and a set of slides. (The author's Preface explains how the book coordinates with the films, and its text, in fact, is divided into "reels" rather than chapters: "Reel 1 -- the Digestive System," etc. He later produced an even more elaborate set of films: 200 reels depcting 300 opeations, released in 1932 under the title "System of General Surgery in Motion Pictures.").…
