Sam Gilliam was an American abstract painter, sculptor, and arts educator. Born in Mississippi, and raised in Kentucky, Gilliam spent his entire adult life in Washington, D.C., eventually being described as the "dean" of the city's arts community. Originally associated with the Washington Colour School, a group of Washington-area artists that developed a form of abstract art from colour field painting in the 1950s and 1960s, Gilliam moved beyond the group's core aesthetics of flat fields of color in the mid-60s by introducing both process and sculptural elements to his paintings.Following early experiments in colour and form, Gilliam became best known for his Drape paintings, first developed in the late 60s and widely exhibited across the United States and internationally over the following decade.

In den Warenkorb24 x 24cm. Paperback, 95pp. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Pace London from 3rd November to 22nd December 2017. Impulse was an exhibition of radical abstract painting from the United States dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on lyrical, post-painterly abstraction, the exhibition features work by Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Sam Gillam, Ed Clark and Frank Bowling. Responding to the dominance of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, these artists boldly experimented with process, form and colour. Each found new ways to apply paint to canvas, championed improvisational techniques, and used colour expressively. Very good condition.
