Hardback. Zustand: Near fine. First Edition. 27 x 31cm 72pp near fine hardback exhibition catalogue featuring the works of Sam Gilliam, some colour fold-outs. Sam Gilliam was an American abstract painter, sculptor, and arts educator. Born in Mississippi, and raised in Kentucky, Gilliam spent his entire adult life in Washington,…D.C., eventually being described as the "dean" of the city's arts community. Originally associated with the Washington Colour School, a group of Washington-area artists that developed a form of abstract art from colour field painting in the 1950s and 1960s, Gilliam moved beyond the group's core aesthetics of flat fields of color in the mid-60s by introducing both process and sculptural elements to his paintings.Following early experiments in colour and form, Gilliam became best known for his Drape paintings, first developed in the late 60s and widely exhibited across the United States and internationally over the following decade.

In den Warenkorb24 x 24cm. Paperback, 95pp. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Pace London from 3rd November to 22nd December 2017. Impulse was an exhibition of radical abstract painting from the United States dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on lyrical, post-painterly abstraction, the exhibition features work by Kenneth Noland, Morris… Louis, Sam Gillam, Ed Clark and Frank Bowling. Responding to the dominance of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, these artists boldly experimented with process, form and colour. Each found new ways to apply paint to canvas, championed improvisational techniques, and used colour expressively. Very good condition.

In den WarenkorbSoftcover/Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Sam Gilliam. The Music of Color: Sam Gilliam 1967-1973. Köln: Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, 2018. Softcover.191 pages. Very good.Minor wear to covers.Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland, 9 June-30 September 2018.Sam Gilliam is one of…America's most prominent abstract painters. The catalogue puts the focus on the years between 1967 and 1973, the period of the greatest radicalism in Gilliam's oeuvre. The paintings he created during these years stand out for their monumentality and forceful use of color. The canvas becomes a medium that records traces of the production process and exhibits its own physicality. At a time when painting seemed to be in decline, Gilliam breathed new life into it; jazz was an important source of inspiration for his expressive and energetic style. 'The Music of Color' also probes the political and historical dimension of Gilliam's oeuvre. While the artist himself rarely comments on political issues, the works in his Martin Luther King series and Jail Jungle reflect the 1968 race riots and the highly polarized debate over black art and abstract painting in 1960s and 1970s America.
