Herausgeber des vorliegenden Buches ist der französische Altphilologe und Universalgelehrte Claude Salmasius (1588-1653). Neben dem Hauptwerk von Florus ist es durch ein Werk des Autors Lucius Ampelius ergänzt, einem Schulautor der römischen Kaiserzeit. - Lucius Annaeus Florus, ein römischer Geschichtsschreiber um das Jahr 120 herum, skizzierte die Geschichte Roms von der Gründung der Stadt bis zur Varusschlacht im 9. Jahr nach Chr. Seine Quellen waren vor allem die Geschichtsschreiber, Politiker und Rhetoriker Titus Livius, Sallust, Seneca d. Ältere und Tacitus. Das Buch, eine Lobschrift auf die Größe und Erhabenheit Roms, ist in vier Abschnitte unterteilt. Im Mittelalter griff man trotz geographischer und chronologischer Fehler häufig auf dieses Werk zurück. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown, early small library stamp on title page alongside "Doublette" ink stamp. The parchment is moderately soiled, front cover is discolored, lacking front free endpaper, else good or better with light soiling on title page. First published in 1649, this is an early issue of Claude Saumaise's royalist tract written in defense of Charles I after his execution in January, 1649. The book provoked an attack by John Milton in his *Defensio pro Populo Anglicano contra Claudii Salmasii Defensionem Regiam* (1651). *OCLC* locates only eight copies.

This work is a defense of Charles I, (written shortly after his execution), supporting Absolute Monarchy and the Divine Right of Kings. [Bound With] MILTON, Joannis [John Milton], Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio Contra Claudii Anonymi, alias Salmasii, Defensionem Regiam. Londini: Typis Du Gardianis, 1652. 192 pages. OCLC 933136975. Second (?) edition of this rebuttal of Saumaise (printed 1651) which was an important work for Milton, establishing his reputation, and celebrated as a victory over Salmasius's writing. The work, written in Latin is noted for its colourful invectives such as a 'dung-hill Frenchman' and indignant attacks on the French scholar. (With thanks for this Pat Marrin!) Wing, M2169. Binding has leather spine and vellum boards. These are somewhat bowed with age. Spine, with gilt titles and decoration is still attractive, but has a couple of small holes to the binding. Pages are clean and tidy throughout, with just a few foxing spots. Attractive armorial ex libris belonging to I.L.B. De Neve to the inside board. They were likely a member of the De Neve family, a name associated with the Low Countries. All works are 125 by 70mm (5 by 2¾ inches).

Contemporary full vellum, sides stamped in gilt with the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam framed within gilt fillets, spine with raised bands, gilt rules, and red morocco label, sprinkled edges, evidence of old ties (now wanting). Titles printed in black and red. Text in Latin, Greek, and some Arabic. 3 engraved title vignettes, botanical engravings, head- and tail-pieces, decorative initials. Some light mellowing to vellum, a few scuffs to boards, contents clean and crisp, an excellent copy. Claude Saumaise (15 April 1588 3 September 1653), also known by the Latin name Claudius Salmasius, was a French classical scholar. The "Pliniane exercitationes" is his most famous work, in which the author, through the commentary on the work of Solinus Polyhistor, known by the title "Collectanea rerum memorabilium", studies its derivation from Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis. Solinus, taking up the works of Pliny, Pomponius Mela, Suetonius, and Terentius Varro, describes the strangest and most wonderful things inherent in peoples, customs, animals, and plants, illustrating them within a geographical framework. Mommsen has theorized that Solinus's work may have transmitted passages from Latin authors completely unknown to us. Solinus's work, in addition to Roman history, contains the description of part of Africa, Asia Minor, Arabia, India, and the Parthian Empire. Saumaise's commentary is considered the most important commentary on the "Collectanea rerum memorabilium." The third volume, entitled "Exercitationes de Homonymis Hyles Iatricae," deals with the botanical nomenclature of medicinal plants, with an essay dedicated to the identification and etymology of manna and saccarum. Salmasius learned Arabic to qualify himself for the botanical part of his task. 'In 1629 Salmasius produced his magnum opus as a critic, his commentary on Solinus's Polyhistor (also known as De mirabilibus mundi), or rather on Pliny, to whom Solinus is indebted for the most important part of his work. Greatly as this commentary may have been overrated by his contemporaries, it is a monument of learning and industry. Salmasius learned Arabic to qualify himself for the botanical part of his task. After declining overtures from Oxford, Padua and Bologna, in 1631 he accepted the professorship formerly held by Joseph Scaliger at Leiden.As a commentator and verbal critic, Salmasius is entitled to very high rank. His notes on the Augustan History and Solinus display not only massive erudition but massive good sense as well; his perception of the meaning of his author is commonly very acute, and his corrections of the text are frequently highly felicitous. His manly independence was shown in many circumstances, and the bias of his mind was liberal and sensible. He turned to the study of theology, Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian when his Protestantism impeded his advancement in law. In 1631 he was called to the Univ. of Leiden to succeed Joseph Scaliger. There he produced 80 books and became widely known as a scholar of the first rank. Supporting the Stuarts, he wrote Defensio regia pro Carlo I (1649), upholding the divine right of monarchy, which brought a celebrated dissenting reply from John Milton. Salmasius major works include an important commentary on Pliny (1629), and Observationes in jus Atticum et Romanum (1645). In 1629 Salmasius produced his magnum opus as a critic, his commentary on Solinuss Polyhistor, or rather on Pliny, to whom Solinus is indebted for the most important part of his work. Mit der gedruckten Widmung Daniel Elzevirs für "Philippo Ottoni ab Herzelles", den Kurmainzischen Geheimen Rat und Diplomaten Philipp Otto von Herzell[es], der 1661/ 62 als Bevollmächtigter in Frankfurt und zuvor, in den Jahren 1657 - 1660 , als Gesandter des Rheinbundes in Den Haag bei der "Föderation Belgischer Provinzen", den General-Staaten (Vereinigte Niederlande), tätig war. Ein Zweig der Familie nannte sich auch Van Herzeele. Cm. 12,5, pp. 468. Leg. coeva in perg. con titoli ms. al dorso. Restauro al frontespizio che non interessa il testo, qualche sottolineatura, peraltro esemplare ben conservato. Opera del Salmasio (1588-1653) scritta su richiesta esplicita di Carlo II allo scopo d'approntare un'apologia del padre Carlo I. Ne scaturirono violente polemiche che portarono ad una forte risposta di John Milton cui fece seguito un'ulteriore presa di posizione del Salmasio. Lo scontro dialettico suscitò notevole interesse tanto che Voltaire ne parla nel Secolo di Luigi XIV. Contraffazione della seconda edizione elzeviriana che vide la luce contemporaneamente all'originale in folio. Cfr., per l'originale elzeviriano, Willems, 658.

Duodecimo vellum yapp edge with manuscript spine title title (bit darkened esp. to spine) (x) +472pp. *Anonymously published work by Claude de Saumaise in vindication of Charles I against the regicides and for the legitimate succession of his son. The Sumptibus Regiis shows that Charles II commissioned this work while in exile. Milton was deputized by Parliament to write a rebuttal to this work, the PRO POPULO ANGLICANO DEFENSIO (see our copy of this for sale V69033). One of various editions published in the year as its original publication in folio which was also published by the Elzeviers, and often reprinted. This is the work by which Salmasius is best remembered. It does not appear by whose influence he was induced to undertake the Defensio Regia, but Charles II defrayed the expense of printing, and presented the author with £ 100. The work provoked the famous reply by Milton Pro populo Anglicano defensio, contre Claudii anonymi, alias Salmasii, defensionem regiam. The war ended with a Parliamentarian victory in 1651. The climax of the Civil War was the trial and execution of King Charles I on January 30, 1649. The monarchy was replaced with a Republic form of government, first the Commonwealth of England (1649-1653), and then the Protectorate under the rule of the dictator Oliver Cromwell, who died in 1658, and his son (1653-1659). Charles II, son of Charles I, went in exile. Cromwell's death in 1658 resulted in a political crisis, which led to the restoration of the monarchy, when the English Parliament resolved to invite the son of Charles I to return. He was proclaimed King in May 1660. § In November 1649, 10 months after the beheading of Charles I, the French classical scholar Claudius Salmasius (Claude Saumaise, 1588-1653), who was professor at the University of Leiden, published at the request of the 19 years old king in exile Charles II a 'Defensio Regia pro Carolo I' (In defence of King Charles I). On the title page Charles II is called 'heredem et successorem legitimum'. It was brought on the market anonymously, and 'sumptibus regiis', by Elsevier at Leiden. The exiled King paid for the printing and rewarded Salmasius with £ 100. It is a defence of absolute monarchy and a fierce condemnation of the English Parliamentary system. § The 'Defensio Regia pro Carolo I' came as a bombshell and provoked in 1651 a scathing reply from the English poet and polemist John Milton, 'Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio' (A Defense of the People of England). Milton, who was appointed under Cromwell 'Secretary for Foreign Tongues' in 1649, was responsible for the Republic's foreign correspondence in Latin, but it was also his task to produce propaganda for the new regime. Milton was ordered by the Council of State to write the 'Defence of the English People', to establish its legitimacy. In this work full of learned vituperation, Milton alludes to Salmasius' effeminacy, comparing him with the Greek mythological Hermaphrodite Salmacis, and he also attacks his wife, Anne Mercier, who wore, that was true, the trousers. The pure Latin prose and the evident learning made Milton's name in Europe. The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, a contemporary, observes concerning both 'Defences': 'They are very good Latin both, and hardly to be judged which is better; and both very ill reasoning, hardly to be judged which is worse; like two declamations 'pro' and 'con', made for exercise only in a rhetoric school by one and the same man'. (Hobbes, Behemoth, Dialogue IV) Hobbes' opinion of this learned controversy is devastating: 'Where Europe thought it had witnessed the sharpest possible contest of principle between an opponent of regicide on one side and a defender of it on the other, Hobbes saw unwitting collusion between twin offpspring of the Reformation. (.) Nor is the remark about the excellence of their Latin offered in mitigation. On the contrary, it is intended to aggravate their offence. (.) Milton and Salmasius are condemned for exhibiting the (.) lethal combination of attributes: eloquence and ill reasoning'. (M.
