(Carmelo Bene)…Sin dagli anni Sessanta le arti visive e il cinema costituiscono per Carmelo Bene complessi e costanti oggetti polemici. Ne discende un inquieto intento iconoclasta che attraversa tutta la sua opera, i cui differenti piani - letterari, filosofici e musicali - sono variamente fatti scartare, resi intersecanti o stratificati, posti in sovrapposizione, poi ricomposti e nuovamente scomposti, in un intenso lavorio interno, senza soluzione di continuità. Le culture visuali degli anni Sessanta definiscono il contesto nel quale Bene si trova e rispetto al quale prende a operare con modalità singolarmente idiosincratiche, in un confronto critico e autocritico inesausto che dispiega una potenza performativa inusitata sia nella sua prima pratica teatrale sia in quella cinematografica. Eppure, la cultura di Bene non è contemporanea a quel contesto: essa è 'inattuale', nel senso e nella misura in cui non si conforma al proprio tempo. Nondimeno, all'inizio del decennio e proprio in quel contesto operativo, la sua pratica si rivela indisciplinata ed eccentrica, anticipa l'happening e le modalità performative che in Italia emergeranno in ambito artistico solo tra il 1967 e il 1968. La pratica di Bene precorre forme, modi e operazioni che sostituiscono all'opera - quale esito, prodotto o 'resto' - la ricerca, il processo, l'evento (l'inaspettato in ciò che accade) con varie incidenze leggibili nei tracciati letterari del suo lavoro, così come negli interventi scenici e nella produzione cinematografica (1968-69). Date le varianti letteraria, teatrale e filmica, quell'opera molteplice che è Nostra Signora dei Turchi fungerà da studio di caso per indagarne i modi performativi all'incrocio tra le arti visive e l'etnografia. L'indagine qui condotta, pur focalizzandosi sulla ricerca del 'primo' Carmelo Bene, poggia sulla sua attività complessiva (1959-2002) e, per quel che è stato possibile, sull'archivio dell'Immemoriale in cui il lavoro di Bene trova inscrizione consegnandoci una massa documentale di straordinario rilievo artistico-culturale.Cosetta Saba insegna Analisi del film e Pratiche audiovisive nella Media Art presso l'Università di Udine, dove è direttore scientifico di La Camera Ottica Lab. I suoi principali interessi di ricerca si concentrano sui linguaggi dell'arte in tutte le sue forme e manifestazioni audiovisive e sui modelli di archiviazione e preservazione di video, film e installazioni artistiche.
