Bearss ; "Among the most disturbing scenes found in American history are the stark images of Union soldiers newly released from Andersonville. Those gaunt, malnourished prisoners of war--now displayed for all posterity as if they were living skeletons in a carnival sideshow--continue to evoke feelings of utter shock, profound sadness, and bitter regret." --from the Prologue, "Andersonville Revisited". Andersonville is remembered for several reasons, among them, the total of 12,912 Union prisoners and 250 Confederate guards who died there between February, 1864 and April, 1865. No other American POW camp received as much publicity as Andersonville, with the U.S. Department of War even circulating photographs of emaciated prisoners, which were reprinted in history texts. Seldom did there appear a mention of the fact that Union soldiers imprisoned there received the same medical care and rations as Confederate soldiers in the field. While there has been much written about Andersonville, this book presents seldom-seen documentation from Confederates familiar with the camp, as well as discussions by contemporary historians. This book is an effort to clarify the troubling questions that remain about the camp: How could this tragedy have happened? And who was to blame? fine. Book.…

In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good. Third Impression. 1906. Third impression. xii, 347pp. and 16 black and white illustrations by W.H. Margetson. Top edge gilt. Samuel Rutherford Crockett (1859-1914) was a prolific Scottish novelist. "The White Plumes of Navarre" is a historical novel set during the tumultuous period of the French Wars of Religion, focusing on the events leading up to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. The narrative intertwines the lives of significant historical figures such as Admiral Coligny and Duke of Guise with fictional characters, including the young protagonist John Stirling and Claire Agnew, as they navigate the treacherous landscape of faith, loyalty, and political intrigue. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. There are few light stains on the rear board. There is a small dent that has caused a little damage to the cloth near the bottom edge of the rear board and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the fore edge of the text block, and on some pages the foxing has seeped a little way into the fore margin. There is no inscription. W.H. Margetson (illustrator).…

Rutherford's paper: pp. 374-400. Clean and fine. First apperance of this famous lecture in which Rutherford predicted the existence of a new constituent of the atomic nucleus and its likely properties. In the lecture Rutherford suggested that "it may be possible for an electron to combine much more closely with the H-nucleus (than is the case in the ordinary hydrogen atom). It is the ontentionof the writer to test (this idea). The existence of such atoms seems almost necessary to explain the building up of heavy elements."Rutherford's collegue Chadwick made several attempts to detect the neutral particle but none was successful until he learned of experiments by the Joliot-Curies in Paris, in which, they said, extremely penetrating gamma rays were emitted. As he suspected, Chadwick found the rays were not gammas but neutrons: and not long afterward Norman Feather, also at the Cavendish, showed that neutrons were capable of causing nuclear disintegrations. Chadwick gave proof of its existence in 1932.…
