Decorative Endpapers. Decorated title page. Yellow cloth with letters in red on the front cover. Minor wear to the extremities with nothing rubbed through top and bottom of the spine slightly wrote, spine slightly faded, covers ever so lightly soiled, gift inscription on front free endpaper, a rubbed through spot in the middle of page seven, all illustrations in find condition and with bright colors, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. If this is another story of the twins, john and Wendy. In this book they meet new friends and their garden, and hear the stories of living things such as bees and butterflies and hands. Of the children will enjoy joining them in their adventures. [from the front matter] Various chapters are devoted to descriptions of a spider, an ant, a snail, a worker bee, a worm, a mole, a butterfly, and a bat. Just a delightful collection of stories that will charm and the child, as well as many hurdles. This is a sequel to JOHN AND WENDY AND THINGS (1946), both examples of juvenile natural history. Hogben also wrote ANCIENT AND MODERN MARVELS (1945) and also a book on navigation, all geared toward children. I was unable to find biographical information on the author. Gilbert Rumbold was a prolific illustrator in the 1930s, especially known for his Art Deco inspired illustrations. He created beautiful fashion illustrations, decorative maps and - those 1930s obsessions - motor cars, ships and airplanes. It is, however, the Savoy Cocktail book for which he is most well known. The book offered here appears less typical of his work, though he did illustrate a book called THE ORIGIN OF LIFE.

In den WarenkorbRUMBOLD, Gilbert. The Wayside Book. Written and illustrated by Gilbert Rumbold. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1934. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). Original publisher's cloth, with dust jacket. Condition: Good. Solid, square boards with a tight and secure binding. The text block is intact and internally clean, with no inscriptions, annotations, or markings. The dust jacket is present and complete, showing shelf wear to the upper and lower spine, with general edge wear consistent with age and sunning but no major losses. Overall, a sound and attractive copy of this first edition. Notes: The Wayside Book is a charmingly written and illustrated work by Gilbert Rumbold, reflecting the interwar British tradition of nature writing and illustration. First editions in original dust jackets are increasingly uncommon, particularly in sound condition, and this copy remains a pleasing example.

Pictorial Hard Cover. Zustand: Fair. Gilbert Rumbold (illustrator). Fourth Printing. The boards are covered in goldtone foil. The front board has a black title block and an illustration and a decoration in green and black. The spine strip has black cloth, but about a fourth of it is chipped off, leaving brown paper exposed. 286 pages; color illustrations, including on the endpapers. The author wrote "Here's How!" above his signature and "February 3/33" below his signature. 2/3's of the black area of the title block has rubbed (white) spots. The foil on the back board is wrinkled along 7 inches of the edges and one other place. The foil has chips on all but one of the boards' edges. The foil is fragile and more chips can occur unless the book is handled and shelved with great care. The text block ends have darkened. Water stain is along nearly all edges of the front endpaper; the back endpaper is less so, but the non-print side of the FEP has more water stain. Nearly half of the pages each have a margin with light water stain, from 1/4 in. to full length of the margin. A few pages have water stain on 2-3 margins. The pages are a little wavy. Photos of the book will be e-mailed upon request. International shipping will require extra shipping cost. Signed by the Authors.

His signature to page 6 with the phrase "Here's How".With the errata slip to page 25 as called for.A first edition, first impression, with the pagination to the preliminary leaves. The Savoy Cocktail book was written by Henry Craddock, one of the most famous bartenders of the 1920s and 1930s. He had an eighteen year tenure at the Savoy Hotel in London which is when he wrote this collection of 750 Cocktails. Craddock is credited with creating many classic cocktails such as the White Lady and the Corpse Reviver #2.Craddock is also known for founding the United Kingdom Bartenders' Guild in 1934. To the introduction Craddock writes on cocktails suitable for a prohibition country, which relates to his personal history. Craddock was originally from America and left to the United Kingdom during the Prohibition. With an historical introduction regarding cocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails and a list of the cocktail recipes in alphabetical order. Craddock separates the work by types of cocktails, sours, toddies, flips, slings, highballs etc. The second part of this work regards wines. In den WarenkorbLondon: Constable & Company. 1930. 8vo. Original cloth-backed boards, lettered in gilt to spine, attractive Art Deco design to the upper cover in green, black, silver and grey, decorative end papers; pp. 288 (the first issue with pagination beginning from preliminaries), with the recipe for 'Bacardi Cocktail' tipped in to p. 25 as issued, Art Deco coloured illustrations throughout by Gilbert Rumbold; wear to edges of boards, minor wear to cloth at hinges of spine, a little rubbing to gilt lettering, but otherwise boards are uncommonly bright and clean; very light spotting to edges, some minor spotting to preliminaries and endpapers; near fine. The true first edition of this celebrated cocktail book in unusually bright condition.Sought after by collectors for both its recipes and the fine Art Deco design, some cocktails included are the 'Corpse Reviver', 'four of these taken in swift succession will unrevive the corpse again'. This drink was intended to be 'taken before 11a.m., or whenever steam and energy are needed'. The 'Earthquake Cocktail', whose greatest quality is that 'if there should happen to be an earthquake on when you are drinking it, it won't matter'. The 'Rattlesnake Cocktail', 'so called because it will either cure Rattlesnake bite, or kill Rattlesnakes, or make you see them'. One cocktail invented by Harry Craddock at the Savoy Hotel on 29th February 1928, in celebration of the Leap Year was the 'Leave it to me Cocktail'. It is said 'to have been responsible for more [marriage] proposals than any other cocktail that has ever been mixed'. Perhaps, this is not surprising with its lethal mix of brandy, Vermouth, Grenadine, and gin. Craddock begins his foreword by stating, 'If everyone knew even a little about the absorbing subject of absorbing alcohol there would be even less Prohibition in the United States of America than there is now.' Craddock was obviously willing to tailor some recipes for his friends across the pond with a section dedicated to 'Cocktails Suitable for a Prohibition Country', but all of the recipes contain alcohol in some form with the 'Special (Rough) Cocktail' even containing '1 Dash of Absinthe'. Craddock claims, however, that the alcohol for these was easy enough to attain. A wonderfully designed book evoking the spirit and gaiety of the 1930s; this copy remains particularly bright.
