The SWANSEA DEVONIAN SOCIETY was founded in 1894 by S. J. DREW ; Swansea is about 38 miles from Barnstaple, and less from Ilfracombe, and in the 19th century regular ships brought peope as well as goods from the West Country to Swansea. FROM Encyclopeadia Britannica 11th. edition - 'The free library and art gallery of the [Swansea] corporation, a four-storeyed building in Italian style erected in 1887, contains the library of the Rev. Rowland Williams (one of the authors of Essays and Reviews), the rich Welsh collection of the Rev. Robert Jones of Rotherhithe, a small Devonian section (presented by the Swansea Devonian Society), and about 8000 volumes and 2500 prints and engravings, intended to be mutually illustrative, given by the Swansea portrait-painter and art critic, John Deffett Francis, from 1876 to i88r, to receive whose first gift the library was established in 1876. It also contains a complete set of the patent office publications.' FROM The Cambrian, 6th December 1907 : 'SWANSEA DEVONIAN SOCIETY FOURTEENTH ANNUAL DINNER. DEVON AND NATIONAL HISTORY. MAYOR.AND CASTLE-STREET WIDENING. The fourteenth annual dinner of the Swansea Devonian Society took place at the Royal Hotel on Thursday evening, when a rlght pleasant time was spent, discussing old associations and junket and cream. Loyal toast was submitted from the chair. Mr. J. Saltern proposed "Navy, Army, and Auxiliary Forces," and Ex-Seni. Webster replied. "Devon our County" was given by the President, who said it was often asked what was it that gave rise to the great affections that Devonians had for their county. Natural charms had strong ties for there was no more beautiful than what was called the delectable county of Devon. (Rev. S. Higman Except Cornwall.") Others said the basis of affection was its dialect, which was said to be the remains of the early Saxons. But it seemed to him that the particular charm which appealed to all Devonians was the charm of the history of the county, which was so full of big events, stirring stories of adventure and heroism, that it stirred the blood and thrilled the heart. No county had given more worthies who had dared, suffered, and done so much to make the history of England what it is to-day.The musical programme was contributed to by Mr. T. H. Spicer (who gave the fine new song, A Song of Devon," by Miss Heard, London), Mr. Tom Jones, and the president, whilst Mr. A. Bond gave a reading in dialect. Mr. T. D. Jones (Morriston) was the accompanist. The rennet for the junket was kindly given by Messrs. Stone and Son, chemists, Exeter.'.
