Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Considering the topic of time in antiquity, juxtaposing cultures and societies, yields remarkable intersections, continuities, and discontinuities in the ways people have engaged with temporality. One of the most persistent dichotomies we find across many premodern societies is that between cyclical and teleological time-time marching inexorably forward, toward a goal, and the markers of nature that seem repetitive, cyclical, and fundamentally stable. Over the millennia much ingenuity has been directed at these models. Specific examinations range from the construction of time and space in prehistory, Roman Britain, quantifications of time in Assyria and Babylonia, through aspects of time in classical India, the Hebrew Bible, China, Greece, and the Roman Empire. With contributions by John C. Barrett (University of Sheffield), Marc Brettler (Brandeis University), Chris Gosden (Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford), Astrid Mller (University of Freiburg), David Pankenier (Lehigh University), Alex Purves (University of California, Los Angeles), Eleanor Robson (University of Cambridge), Ludo Rocher (University of Pennsylvania), and Michele Renee Salzman (University of California, Riverside). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp 29-41. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Students of the Greek iambos continue to dispute whether the poets targets of abuse were fictional or real characters. Most recently the Cologne Archilochos has challenged scholars to square the received biographical tradition about the poet with its new evidence. Is the I of the poem Archilochos himself? Are the characters generic stock-figures, each bearing an appropriately significant name: Lycambes the Wolf-walker, Neobule the woman of New Plan, for example? Did the iambic poet wish to vent his private enmity against real figures, whether out of a desire for personal vengeance or for the purpose of exposing reprobates to the public? Or did his inspiration spring less from real life and more from a desire to demonstrate his skill in a literary tradition in which invective and obscenity were de rigueur? For that matter, could the poet pursue a middle course, enlisting real figures, but in entirely fictional situations? Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…

Zustand: Gut. pp. 174-179. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In a note in Heph. 3.1 ( = Hipponax Testim. 21 Dg), Choeroboscus relates several etymologies of the term iambos. The first is the familiar derivation from the mythical lambe, the servant of King Celeus of Eleusis, who cheered up the grieving Demeter by mocking her. This story, well known to us from the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (198211), functioned as an aition of the ritual jesting and abuse practiced at the various festivals of Demeter, and, by extension, of the poetic genre known as the iambos. Choeroboscus second etymology, which claims Hipponax as the evretis of the iambos, is much more obscure, and raises many questions. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Oxford Handbook of Galen provides a comprehensive overview of the life, work, and legacy of Galen (129--c. 216 CE), arguably the most important medical figure of the Graeco-Roman world. It contains essays by thirty leading experts on Galen's life and background, his medical theories, his therapeutic and clinical practices, and his philosophical contributions in the areas of logic, epistemology, causation, scientific method, and ethics. The authors offer accessible, but thorough and detailed, analyses of all major areas of Galen's thought, considered in their original historical context, as well as of the most important pathways of the transmission of his texts and his intellectual legacy, from late antiquity to early modern times and from western Europe to Tibet and China.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The essays in this volume explore the many aspects of the 'political' in the plays of Greek comic dramatist Aristophanes (5th century BCE), posing a variety of questions and approaching them through diverse methodological lenses. They demonstrate that 'politics' as reflected in Aristophanes' plays remains a fertile, and even urgent, area of inquiry, as political developments in our own time distinctly color the ways in which we articulate questions about classical Athens. As this volume shows, the earlier scholarship on politics in (or 'and') Aristophanes, which tended to focus on determining Aristophanes' 'actual' political views, has by now given way to approaches far more sensitive to how comic literary texts work and more attentive to the complexities of Athenian political structures and social dynamics. All the studies in this volume grapple to varying degrees with such methodological tensions, and show, that the richer and more diverse our political readings of Aristophanes can become, the less stable and consistent, as befits a comic work, they appear to be.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Ancient Concepts of the Hippocratic, Lesley Dean-Jones and Ralph Rosen have gathered 19 international authorities in ancient medicine to identify commonalities among the treatises of the Hippocratic Corpus which led scholars of antiquity to group them under the single name of Hippocrates. Most recent scholarship has drawn attention to the divergences between individual treatises and groups of treatises, emphasizing the agonistic facet of the ancient medical profession. In contrast, in this volume contributors look to find points of agreement between the writings that go beyond claims of rationality. Topics considered include ontological claims about the discipline of medicine itself, the view of the patient as a perceiving unity, theories on the function of glands and the importance of regimen.…
