Most recently the Cologne Archilochos has challenged scholars to square the received biographical tradition about the poet with its new "evidence." Is the "I" of the poem Archilochos himself? Are the characters generic stock-figures, each bearing an appropriately significant name: Lycambes the "Wolf-walker," Neobule the woman "of New Plan," for example? Did the iambic poet wish to vent his private enmity against real figures, whether out of a desire for personal vengeance or for the purpose of exposing reprobates to the public? Or did his inspiration spring less from real life and more from a desire to demonstrate his skill in a literary tradition in which invective and obscenity were de rigueur?
