Hardcover. Large 8vo. pp xi, 290. Original publisher's faux green leather boards, lettered silver on spine and front cover. Reprint of the 1947 ed. published by B. Herder Book Co., St. Louis. From the library of J.P. Mayer (1903 - 1992) with his neat book stamp on the front endpaper. J. P. Mayer was the advisory editor for the Arno Press series. Later he became professor Emeritus at Reading University and authored books on De Tocqueville, Max Weber and French political thought. He fled to England in 1936 having been a leading figure in the anti-Nazi movement in Germany. He then worked for Britain in the Ministry of Economic Warfare. Paperback. Zustand: Brand New. 60482nd edition. 316 pages. 9.25x6.25x1.00 inches. In Stock.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Fine, still sealed in intact shrink-wrap. The wrapping remains complete with no rips, tears, or openings observed. Minor normal gathering and wrinkling of the shrink-wrap is visible along portions of the edges and corners from the original sealing process. Tan and cream cloth-covered boards and stamped lettering remain clean and attractive beneath the wrap. Because the book remains sealed, the interior has not been opened or examined; no representations are therefore made regarding unseen internal characteristics beyond the externally observable condition. An unusually well-preserved unopened example of the 1998 Liberty Fund hardcover edition. Heinrich A. Rommen's important study of natural-law jurisprudence examines the historical development and philosophical foundations of natural law from the classical world through medieval scholasticism and into modern political and legal thought. Originally published in German in 1936 and first translated into English in the twentieth century, Rommen's work contrasts the traditional natural-law tradition associated with thinkers including Cicero and Thomas Aquinas with later theories of natural rights and political authority associated with Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau. The Liberty Fund edition includes Thomas R. Hanley's translation and an introduction by legal and political philosopher Russell Hittinger. The volume remains particularly relevant to collectors and researchers in jurisprudence, constitutional thought, political philosophy, Catholic intellectual history, natural-rights theory, and the history of legal positivism. A desirable sealed hardcover example of a title considerably scarcer in this format than the readily available paperback edition. Seller's Note Offered for collectible, historical, bibliographic, and research purposes only. Softcover. Fourth printing. Quarto. XI, [1], 290pp. Original printed wrappers over burgundy cloth with gold lettering on spine. Human laws have their ultimate root in the very nature of things. This basis is ascertained by human reason. We call it natural law. All other laws for men's behavior to one another must accord with this natural law, must not violate its principles. This book provides an admirable background for this study in the first part, which deals with the history of the idea of natural law. The author then proceeds to discuss the philosophy and content of the natural law. Minor rubbing along edges of wrappers. Slight offsetting on endpapers. Wraps in overall good, binding and interior in good+ to very good condition.…
