In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Good to Very Good. First Edition. 1936. First edition. 192pp. This is a biography of Henry Grattan (1746-1820), an Irish politician and lawyer who campaigned for legislative freedom for the Irish Parliament from Britain. It is a volume in the publisher's 'Noted Irish Lives' series. The book is bound in the original brick-red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining to the boards. The spine ends are bumped with wear and a little damage to the cloth and the titling on the spine is worn. There is a split of about 3/8" to the cloth on the bottom of the front spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the first five pages, including the title-page, and a little scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. This copy was presented to a school library but the only such indications are a presentation label (Rainey's School, Magherafelt) on the front free endpaper.
First American Edition. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Slight suggestion only of dust-dulling to the spine bands and panel edges. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong. Physical description: xix, 399p. ; 23cm. Subjects: Dublin (Ireland) -- History -- Easter Rising, 1916. 3 Kg.

This is a comprehensive historical and interpretive survey of literature in Ireland from its origins in pre-Christian times up to the present day. The authors first examine the civilization and literature of ancient Ireland, and then look at the effects of cultural conflict and frustration with the decay of the Gaelic tradition and the beginnings of a new literary tradition in English with the writings of Jonathan Swift. This tradition flourished throughout the 18th and 19th century, reaching its zenith with the Irish literary revival and the arrivals of Yeats, Joyce, Synge and others. finally there is an overview of the present state of Anglo-Irish literature. The book is bound in the original blue boards with gold titling on the spine. It is in excellent condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and bumping to the spine ends.
