Hanley et Robert King, est la traduction éditoriale française d'une chanson-réplique écrite pour capitaliser sur le triomphe de Yes! We Have No Bananas (Frank Silver et Irving Cohn, 1923), numéro un des ventes américaines pendant cinq semaines et l'un des phénomènes de music-hall les plus retentissants de la décennie. Robert King, compositeur prolifique de la Tin Pan Alley alors sous contrat exclusif avec l'éditeur new-yorkais Shapiro, Bernstein & Co, et James F. Hanley, déjà auteur de standards comme Second Hand Rose, unissent leurs plumes pour cette parodie popularisée notamment par Eddie Cantor et Belle Baker dès l'été 1923. Francis Salabert, qui avait fait de sa maison la principale importatrice parisienne des succès américains, en publie l'édition française dès l'année suivante, confiant comme à son habitude l'illustration à Roger de Valerio, dessinateur attitré de la maison. Celui-ci reprend, pour la seconde fois en quelques mois, le même dispositif visuel déjà mobilisé pour la chanson originale : le motif de la banane y devient prétexte à une imagerie empruntée au répertoire de la caricature raciale, indépendamment du contenu réel des paroles. Cette récurrence offre un cas d'école du phénomène que l'historienne Petrine Archer-Straw a qualifié de « négrophilie » : l'appropriation, par la culture commerciale et artistique parisienne des années folles, de signes associés à la culture noire américaine, dans un rapport ambigu mêlant fascination et stéréotypie. Bien que réalisée par un artiste français, dans une veine expressionniste, la couverture reprend l'image…rie stéréotypée des Afro-américains, véhiculée, depuis la guerre de Sécession, par la caricature raciste américaine. Pourtant, en 1923, cette violente stigmatisation avilissante et essentialisante fondée sur l'idéologie d'une hiérarchie ethnique, est facétieusement détournée par les noirs américains notamment à travers la culture du Jazz and Blues et par quelques grandes figures artistiques dont Joséphine Baker. Ainsi, dans sa Revue Nègre se réapproprie-t-elle avec humour et sensualité la représentation dégradante dont les noirs sont victimes. Il est alors parfois difficile dans les représentations de la négritude de ces années folles de distinguer la frontière entre la caricature raciste et sa réinterprétation moderne moquant le mythe racial. Toutefois, ce nouveau fox trot de Franck Silver et Irving Cohn qui fait alors un tabac aux Etats-Unis et que le magazine Billboard placera en 1948 dans sa liste Fifty Years of Song Hits, n'a aucun rapport avec la négritude. Il est inspiré d'une réplique d'un épicier grec suite à la pénurie due à la rouille de la banane. Totalement inadéquate, l'image de Valerio est inspirée par la simple évocation de la banane associée à l'Afrique pour le public français et ainsi à la « sauvagerie » fantasmée du noir africain. Cette réinterprétation colonialiste du cliché racial se distingue de l'imagerie américaine, notamment par le dénuement des personnages, les boucles d'oreilles des enfants et leur chevelure éparse. On retrouvera cette même iconographie dans les bande-dessinée franco-belge, dont Tintin au Congo quelques années plus tard. Très bel exemplaire de cette partition originale française d'un des grands succès du Fox-Trot, d'une grande qualité graphique en dépit de son thème raciste. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition of this vocal and piano score illustrated on the first cover with a color drawing by Roger de Valerio. Although created by a French artist in an expressionist vein, the cover reproduces the stereotypical imagery of African Americans that had been conveyed since the Civil War through American racist caricature. Yet in 1923, this violent, degrading and essentializing stigmatization based on the ideology of ethnic hierarchy was facetiously subverted by Black Americans, notably through Jazz and Blues culture and by several major artistic figures including Josephine Baker. Thus, in her Revue Nègre, she humorously and sensually reappropriated the degrading representation of which Black people were victims. It was then sometimes difficult in the representations of blackness during these roaring twenties to distinguish the boundary between racist caricature and its modern reinterpretation mocking racial myth. However, this new fox trot by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn, which was then a huge hit in the United States and which Billboard magazine would place in 1948 on its list of Fifty Years of Song Hits, had no connection to blackness. It was inspired by a remark from a Greek grocer following the shortage due to banana blight. Completely inadequate, Valerio's image was inspired by the simple evocation of the banana associated with Africa for the French public and thus with the fantasized "savagery" of the Black African. This colonialist reinterpretation of the racial cliché differs from American imagery, notably through the nakedness of the characters, the children's earrings and their disheveled hair. This same iconography would be found in Franco-Belgian comics, including Tintin in the Congo a few years later. A very handsome copy of this original French score of one of the great Fox-Trot successes, of great graphic quality despite its racist theme. *.

Bel exemplaire.…* Manda est extraite de la comédie musicale américaine The Chocolate Dandies, créée à Broadway le 1er septembre 1924 sur une musique d'Eubie Blake et des paroles de Noble Sissle. Le rôle-titre y fut créé par la jeune Valaida Snow. La distribution comptait également, dans un rôle comique nommé « That Comedy Chorus Girl », une certaine Joséphine Baker, alors âgée de dix-huit ans, remarquée par la presse new-yorkaise pour son numéro de danseuse volontairement désynchronisée et son strabisme comique imitant l'acteur burlesque Ben Turpin. Cette édition française, publiée par Francis Salabert dès 1924 avec une adaptation des paroles par Jacques-Charles, futur créateur des grandes revues du Casino de Paris, atteste ainsi d'une diffusion du répertoire scénique afro-américain en France plus d'un an avant l'éclat parisien de La Revue Nègre (octobre 1925), qui fera de Joséphine Baker une vedette. La couverture de Roger de Valério, dans une veine expressionniste caractéristique de son travail pour Salabert, recourt à une imagerie caricaturale du corps noir dont la généalogie précise reste à établir : elle se situe au croisement d'une tradition coloniale française de représentation fantasmée du corps noir, antérieure et autonome, et d'une tradition américaine issue des minstrel shows, importée en France avec le jazz. Cette imagerie relève de ce que les historiens de l'art nomment la « négrophilie » : un engouement caractéristique de l'avant-garde parisienne des années 1920 pour la culture noire, jazz, danse et art africain, qui se construit paradoxalement sur les mêmes ressorts stéréotypés que cette réhabilitation est appelée à dénoncer: la fascination pour le « primitif » et la caricature raciale procédant d'un seul et même geste. C'est cette ambivalence, propre à la période, qui permet à une scène musicale diffusant une iconographie dévalorisante d'offrir dans le même temps à des artistes noirs américains une ascension, une célébrité et une liberté que la ségrégation leur refusait aux États-Unis. Quelques mois à peine après cette édition, l'arrivée de Joséphine Baker à Paris cristallisera ce paradoxe, dans une ville déjà réputée à l'échelle internationale comme un foyer de libération des murs et de rencontre entre créateurs de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Monde. The cast also included, in a comic role named « That Comedy Chorus Girl », a certain Josephine Baker, then aged eighteen, who attracted the attention of the New York press with her deliberately out-of-step dancing and comic squint modelled on the slapstick actor Ben Turpin. This French edition, published by Francis Salabert as early as 1924 with an adaptation of the lyrics by Jacques-Charles, the future creator of the great revues at the Casino de Paris, thus bears witness to the circulation of African American stage repertoire in France more than a year before the Parisian sensation of La Revue Nègre in October 1925, which would make Josephine Baker a star.
