Hierfür geht Robert Schnepf im ersten Teil seiner Untersuchung drei Gruppen von Schwierigkeiten nach, die ein Leser mit der Ethik haben kann: den Schwierigkeiten, die schon durch die Sprache der Ethik aufgeworfen werden, wenn es gilt, die einzelnen Ausdrücke genau zu verstehen; den Schwierigkeiten, die man bekommt, wenn man sich die Lehrsätze, Beweise und Argumentationen zurechtlegen will; und schließlich den Schwierigkeiten, die sich auftun, wenn man nach der Tragfähigkeit der Argumentationen Spinozas im Kontext der Diskussionen seiner Zeitgenossen fragt. Es zeigt sich, dass es wenig Sinn hat, diese Fragen direkt anzugehen. An wenigen Beispielen wird in der Einleitung illustriert, dass die Bandbreite der Interpretationen schon der einfachsten Ausdrücke und Lehrsätze derartig breit ist, dass es hilfreich wäre, zuerst genau zu untersuchen, wie diese Fülle von divergierenden Interpretationen zustandekommt. Daher wird im ersten Teil der Arbeit versucht, die impliziten Interpretationsvoraussetzungen von drei paradigmatischen Spinozainterpretationen herauszuarbeiten, nämlich von den Interpretationen Hegels, Gueroults und Wolfsons. Ziel ist es, nicht nur die drei Spinozainterpretationen darzustellen und zu kritisieren, um so von ihnen zu lernen, sondern mehr noch ihre verborgenen Interpretationsvoraussetzungen zu gewinnen. Im zweiten Teil werden diese Interpretationsvoraussetzungen als Interpretationsthesen gefasst, um sie durch bessere Interpretationen zu ersetzen.
