London: Printed for Richard Baldwin in Ball-Court, near the Black Bull in the Old Baily, 1681. The volume is paginated as follows: [2], 5, [1] p. The volume collates as follows: [A]2 B2. ESTC: R8776 Wing P154. Each leaf measures 294 x 190 mm. The Volume is in Very good Condition disbound, with generally clean, well margined leaves, some mild general toning, as well as some small creases and fox marks. Of 'The Substance of the Information'. Richard Perkin. Popish Plot informer involved in the Trial of the Lord Stafford. In 1678, Viscount Stafford was implicated in Titus Oates's later discredited "Popish Plot", and sent to the Tower of London on 31 October 1678, along with four other Catholic peers. They were due to be put on trial in early 1679, but Charles prorogued Parliament and it was delayed. The King initially seems to have had some suspicions about Stafford's loyalty, especially after hearing the seemingly plausible evidence of the informer Stephen Dugdale, and went so far as to offer Stafford a royal pardon if he would confess; but he later altered his opinion. Scepticism about the plot grew and it was thought that the imprisoned peers might be released, but anti-Catholic feelings revived in 1680 and Stafford was put on trial in November for treason. As a peer he claimed the privilege of peerage to be tried before the House of Lords, presided over by the Lord High Steward. As events would show, however, a peer could not take the sympathy of his fellow peers, even those peers who were his blood relations, for granted. The main evidence against Stafford came from Titus Oates, who said he had seen a document from the Pope naming Stafford as a conspirator; and from Stephen Dugdale, who testified that Stafford had tried to persuade him to kill the King when Stafford was visiting Dugdale's employers, the Astons, at their country house, Tixall, Staffordshire. Title continues: "In the Court of Kings-Bench, in an Action upon the Case; And afterwards by Error; Sued in the Exchequer-Chamber." Author was a judge on the Court of Common-Pleas and Speaker of the House of Lords. Bernardiston was elected by his county to serve in Parliament but Soames prevented him from taking office. Atkyns ruled in favour of Bernardiston. Second part only of Wing A4136.…

ILLUSTRATED WITH 230 coats of arms on 8 plates, double page map, three double page views of the city of Gloucester and 61 DOUBLE PAGE VIEWS OF THE HOUSES OF THE NOBILITY AND GENTRY BY KIP all showing their fine gardens and grounds. (73 in total). Some creasing and splits to the folds but without loss. A fairly respectable copy. This work is famous for its splendid views. Sir Robert Atkyns, FRS (1647-1711) was a topographer, antiquary, and Member of Parliament. He is best known for his county history, The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire, first published in 1712. Johannes Kip (16521722) was a Dutch draftsman, engraver and print dealer. He made a speciality of engraved views of English country houses.…

Full nineteenth century red morocco, sides with elaborate gilt decorated panels and borders, spine with raised bands and gilt decorated compartments, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Complete with 230 coats of arms on 8 plates, double page map, double page plan of the city of Gloucester, West view of the city and view of the cathedral, plus 61 double page views of the seats of the nobility and gentry engraved by Kipp. Light spotting to end-leaves and last few leaves of text (index), occasional offsetting from the plates, contents generally very nice and clean, binding slightly rubbed at joints, overall a very good handsome copy. The second edition has the same number of plates as the first except the portrait which was only issued in the first edition (1712). "Overshadowed by his father, who as chief baron of the exchequer was speaker of the House of Lords between 1689 and 1693, and with whom he had political disagreements, Atkyns refused to take the oath of allegiance to William III and chose to retire to Pinbury Park, where he had the opportunity to explore his topographical interests. The first of the three major Gloucestershire antiquaries the other two being Ralph Bigland (1712 1784) and Samuel Rudder (1726 1801) Atkyns collected material for parish histories, incorporating manuscripts on church history passed to him by Richard Parsons (1643 1711), chancellor of Gloucester diocese between 1677 and 1711. He compiled comprehensive manorial descents and attempted to record the population of each parish, based on the numbers of houses therein and the yearly birth and burial numbers. The resulting first folio county history of Gloucestershire, his Ancient and Present State of Glostershire (1712), which eulogizes the Stuarts, is especially valuable for its series of sixty-four engravings by Johannes Kip, illustrating the county seats and manor houses in the first decade of the eighteenth century, and preserving a record of features now altered or entirely lost" (Robert J.
