Octavo, bound in full paneled calf with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, all edges speckled red. In near fine condition. Scarce. English judge and political writer Sir Robert Atkyns was appointed a Knight of the Bath in 1661 and later served with distinction as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1689. He is best remembered for Parliamentary and Political Tracts, a collection of essays and speeches confronting the constitutional and parliamentary controversies of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century England. Composed in the turbulent aftermath of the English Civil Wars, the tracts defend the authority of Parliament, the rule of law, and the liberties of the subject, reflecting the volatile political climate of the Restoration and early Hanoverian era. Together, they provide a vivid record of contemporary debate and stand as a lasting contribution to early modern British political thought.

Full nineteenth century red morocco, sides with elaborate gilt decorated panels and borders, spine with raised bands and gilt decorated compartments, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Complete with 230 coats of arms on 8 plates, double page map, double page plan of the city of Gloucester, West view of the city and view of the cathedral, plus 61 double page views of the seats of the nobility and gentry engraved by Kipp. Light spotting to end-leaves and last few leaves of text (index), occasional offsetting from the plates, contents generally very nice and clean, binding slightly rubbed at joints, overall a very good handsome copy. The second edition has the same number of plates as the first except the portrait which was only issued in the first edition (1712). "Overshadowed by his father, who as chief baron of the exchequer was speaker of the House of Lords between 1689 and 1693, and with whom he had political disagreements, Atkyns refused to take the oath of allegiance to William III and chose to retire to Pinbury Park, where he had the opportunity to explore his topographical interests. The first of the three major Gloucestershire antiquaries the other two being Ralph Bigland (1712 1784) and Samuel Rudder (1726 1801) Atkyns collected material for parish histories, incorporating manuscripts on church history passed to him by Richard Parsons (1643 1711), chancellor of Gloucester diocese between 1677 and 1711. He compiled comprehensive manorial descents and attempted to record the population of each parish, based on the numbers of houses therein and the yearly birth and burial numbers. The resulting first folio county history of Gloucestershire, his Ancient and Present State of Glostershire (1712), which eulogizes the Stuarts, is especially valuable for its series of sixty-four engravings by Johannes Kip, illustrating the county seats and manor houses in the first decade of the eighteenth century, and preserving a record of features now altered or entirely lost" (Robert J.
