In full calf of the time with ruling in blind, floral decoration at each corner, spine has raised bands and red morocco title with gilt. Corners bit rubbed, hinges cracking but holding. Interior has the ownership inscription of J. Addison 1719, which seems to be that of Joseph Addison, the well-known English writer and publisher, who died 1719. The signature very closely matches other authenticated examples of his signature. There is also a pasted down review of the book. First free endpaper has extensive Latin notes which seem to be in a different hand, along with a modern ownership inscription. The verso of that leaf and the next leaf have extensive notes by the modern owner, neatly done. Title page has an old inscription as well, different from the others. Otherwise the text is clean and unmarked, some foxing and browning, especially in the rear indices, one page has a clean tear in the margin. Text in Latin with double column commentary/notes below. Nice patina to the leather and a generally good copy, with interesting provenance. Minucius Felix was one of the earliest Latin Christian apologists, about which almost nothing is know. "His name survives through his Octavius, a dialogue held on the beach at Ostia, between a pagan and a Christian and, of course, the latter succeeds in convincing his opponent. Richly gilt beautiful contemporary vellum ' Schoolprize binding ' with large gilt "Hagae Comitis" (The Hague, Netherlands) coat of arms stamp within gilt borders on both covers, gilt spine with floral ornaments, and early red leather title label: "Juvenal Et Persius - Cum Notis Variorum" . A well bound book, with engraved title-page, followed by the printed title-page in red & black. "Auli Persii Flacci Satyrarum liber I. cum notis variorum" has half title and separate pagination. Praefixa est Nic. Rigaltii De satira Juvenalis dissertatio, Notes and commentary by C. Schrevelius. Error in pagination: p. 378 misnumbered 348. Complete and in good, solid condition, clean Latin text throughout. 8vo. [46pp.]/pp.525/[95pp. - Index] /pp.112/[18pp. - Index} . This is a new edition ('Editio Nova'), with commentaries, a life of Juvenal, and a bibliography of various editions. Decimus Junius Juvenalis, known in English as Juvenal, was a Roman poet (1st to 2nd century AD), who wrote a series of poems which, together, are called the 'Satires' ('Satyrae'). He wrote at least 16 poems in dactylic hexameter form, which were divided between five books, and which covered many, if not most, aspects of life in pagan Rome. There is no complete list of Juvenal's manuscripts but at least 500 medieval copies are known to exist. This copy is bound in vellum with an elaborate device embossed in gilt on the front board. As was the practice then, the spine is hand-lettered with the title, year, and showing was appears to be a Roman soldier, flanked by two maidens in front of whom kneels a satyr. All 16 of the poems are present, followed by a comprehensive index. Books like this, bound in this beautul way, are called school prize bindings and were given to excellent students in municipal schools in 17th century Holland.…

L'avvocato e studioso francese Nicolas Rigault (Rigaltius, 1577-1654) divenne bibliotecario della biblioteca reale, dal 1613 al Consiglio parlamentare di Metz, poi dal procuratore generale alla Camera di Nancy e infine direttore del paesaggio di Metz. Editio princeps of the original Greek text, published with an annotated Latin translation by Nicolas Rigault (Rigaltius 1577-1654), a distinguished French classical scholar, who succeeded Casabon as Royal librarian in Paris. Onosander (Onesandros), a pedantic Greek philosopher of the first century A.D., was the chief authority for the military writings of several Byzantine emperors. His work in 42 chapters, entitled 'The General' explains the broad principles of command, the formation of an army, the preparation for battle, and other aspects of warfare from an ethical standpoint. 'The earliest military treatise wherein so much stress is laid upon the commander's duties, the morale of the troops, the ethical side of warfare' (Sarton). The text became very popular during the Renaissance and was translated into Latin (1494), German (1532), French and Italian (1546), and English (1563).
