In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. 178pp. 5.5 x 7.5 in. ; color pictorial cover by Timmons ; "The lead and cover story is part one (of two) of "The Fairy Chessmen" by Lewis Padgett (a pseudonym for Henry Kuttner working with C.L. Moore.) It is roughly a century into the future, and the world is at war.again. After World War Two, the governments of Eurasia had crumbled, and reformed as the Falangists. They and America are the two superpowers and implacable enemies. Thanks to atom-bomb-proof shields and robot warfare, the war has stalemated for years. Most Americans live deceptively peaceful lives in scattered communities on the surface, while the warmen toil in vast underground cities whose actual locations are closely guarded secrets. Low Chicago might be below the ruins of Old Chicago, or anywhere in the Midwest. Of course, in such conditions claustrophobia and other mental illnesses are a continuing concern, and it's up to the Department of Psychometrics to keep the warmen in good mental health. Which is why it's concerning that Cameron, the head of the department, has been having hallucinations of eyeball doorknobs and talking clocks. He's trying to keep it a secret, but his help is desperately needed by the War Department. It seems they have captured a scientific formula from the enemy, one that drives anyone who studies it mad (sometimes giving them strange powers in the process. For example, the levitating man who thinks he's Muhammad's corpse.) There are time travel shenanigans involved, and one character seems determined to produce a specific future. The title comes from "fairy chess", variants of the strategy game that use changed rules, such as a knight that can only capture backwards, or a 10×10 board. The formula changes the rules of physics, sometimes in mid-equation, and scientifically trained minds crack under the strain. A nifty throwaway (probably) bit is the existence of "fairylands", miniature cities with tiny robots that people play with ala the Sims. There's also an amusing typo when one character claims he's "half misogynist" when he means "misanthrope.".The cliffhanger is neat: "The edges of the spoon thickened, curled, spread into cold metallic lips. And kissed him." ; "N Day" by Philip Latham (pen name of R.S. Richardson) concerns an astronomer who discovers the sun is about to go nova. He tells the world, but is dismissed as a crackpot. (Had there been more time, someone would have checked his math and found him correct.) As a result, he finds his spine for the first time in decades.; "Veiled Island" by Emmett McDowell takes place on Venus (the pulp Venus of swamps and jungles.) A three-person anthropological team goes in search of the title island to investigate reports of a new variant of human. Apparently, unlike Earth, Venus just keeps producing new human variants out of the swamps which then climb up the ladder of civilization as they travel to the other side of the planet.; "A Matter of Length" by Ross Rocklynn (pen name of Ross Louis Rocklin) takes place in a far future with galactic travel. A stable mutation has created a new kind of human, the "double-brained" Hypnos, who have the ability to hypnotize ordinary humans. They are not physically distinguishable from other humans, but can be detected by "Sensitives." Hypnos face severe prejudice, and there's a war going on between societies that want to exterminate them and those that tolerate them. ; "The Plants" by Murray Leinster takes place on a planet with only one form of life. Plants with flowers that follow the sun.or anything unusual that happens. Four men whose spaceship was sabotaged crash-land on the planet. Are they more in danger from the pirates that sabotaged the ship for its precious cargo.or from the plants? ; "Fine Feathers" by George O. Smith is the final fiction piece. It's a science fiction retelling of the fable "The Bird with Borrowed Feathers" -- SKJAM! reviews ; wear, else G. Book.…

Bs. ear', and describes 'the throng, the busy anxious & generally consequential throng around him', before praising Brougham fulsomely: 'How any man can daily & hourly endure such intensity of thought as some of his duties require, interrupted & distracted as it frequently is by an infinite variety of important questions to be answered on the instant, how any man can endure this & retain his senses is to me wholly incomprehensible. Still he does endure it, his assiduity as a Judge, as my friend Docr. Lushington told me the other day, will if he continue it, kill half the profession, & in spite of all this he reads more than any of us. Books pamphlets & newspapers he has read them all, he has even by this time I dare say read your scheme, his attention being called to it by the letter which I put into his hands. You shall hear from me again when I have again an opportunity of speaking to this extraordinary personage, & that opportunity I will make after allowing him a reasonable time to have read & considered your book,' He concludes with a reminiscence of 'old Chancellor Eldon', 'an agreeable man' with whom Suffield had 'only a slight acquaintance, yet during a dull debate I used to sit by him on the Woolsack, take snuff & chat with him pleasantly on any subject that occurred to me'. Returning to Brougham he states that he has 'long been in habits of intimacy' with 'the present Chancellor', yet he has 'not conversed with him five times, & then only on business of importance, since he came into office': 'I mention these things in order to convey to you some idea of the man we have to deal with, & to account for my not having sooner urged your book upon his immediate attention, I mean your last edition'.…

Russell A Strong served as a navigator with the 306th Bomb Group. He flew in Milton Adam's crew. He also was in Intelligence and Public information for six weeks at Thurleigh [13 Sept 1944 to 1 Nov 1944]. He completed his missions on 26 November 1944. R.A. Strong, became the founder and long-time secretary of the 306th Bomb Group Association and attended the official opening of the American Air Museum at Duxford. This is the first volume issued by the 306th Bomb Group Association to provide its membership with more detailed information about the activities of the four combat squadrons of the 306th Bomb Group. The four diaries were prepared between 1942 and 1945 by the several intelligence officers assigned to the squadrons. In this volume at lease three men actually did the writing at various times. These diaries deal in large measure with the combat phase of squadron life, but include other aspects of events at Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, England, the home of the 306th Bombardment Group from early September 1942 until late 1945, long after the end of hostilities. Appended are lists compiled in more recent years. These lists previously appeared in 306th Echoes, and have been edited and enhanced. Much of the material contained herein furnished essential data for the Editor's First Over Germany. The squadron was first established in March 1942 at Gowen Field, Idaho as the 368th Bombardment Squadron, one of the original four squadrons of the 306th Bombardment Group. In April, its personnel moved to Wendover Field, Utah, where it began training with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers. On 1 August 1942, the squadron's ground echelon began its deployment, spending a week at Richmond Army Air Base, Virginia before moving to Fort Dix, New Jersey at the Port of Embarkation. It sailed on the RMS Queen Elizabeth on 30 August, arriving in Scotland on 5 September 1942. The air echelon departed for Westover Field, Massachusetts, and began ferrying their B-17s to England via the North Atlantic ferrying route. The squadron settled into its combat station, RAF Thurleigh, England, in early September. Although several bomber units arrived in England before the 368th, when these units left England to participate in Operation Torch it became, along with its companion squadrons of the 306th Group, the oldest bombardment squadrons of VIII Bomber Command. It few its first combat mission on 9 October 1942 against a steel factory near Lille, France, but with poor results. This was the first mission on which VIII Bomber Command assembled a strike force of over 100 bombers. The squadron operated primarily against strategic targets, including the locomotive factory at Lille, marshaling yards at Rouen, France, and Stuttgart, Germany. The squadron took part in the first strike into Germany by bombers of Eighth Air Force on 27 January 1943 when it struck U-boat yards at Wilhelmshaven. It struck shipbuilding yards at Vegesack, ball bearing plants at Schweinfurt, the aircraft factory at Leipzig, Germany, and similar facilities. On 11 January 1944, the squadron participated in an attack on an aircraft plant in central Germany, near Brunswick. Extensive cloud cover had resulted in the recall of two of the three bombardment divisions involved in the mission and made the rendezvous of the fighter groups scheduled to provide cover in the target area difficult. In contrast, clear weather to the east of the target permitted the Germans to assemble one of the largest fighter formations since October 1943, with 207 enemy fighters making contact with the strike force. For this mission, the squadron was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC). The following month the squadron earned a second DUC.…
