Ghillany `ist der erste, welcher die von Reimarus und Strauss erkannte Eschatologie in einen positiven historischen Rahmen, den Aufriss Venturini's, eintragt und es unternimmt ein einseitig eschatologisches Leben-Jesu zu schreiben. Er wurde Bibliothekar zu Nurnberg, 1841, und verlegte sich auf die antiorthodoxe Schriftstellerei, zeichnete sich aber auch durch hervorragende profangeschichtliche Werke aus. In der Quellenfrage steht Ghillany ungefahr auf dem Tubinger Standpunkt, nur dass er den Matthaus fur junger als den Lukas halt, und den Markus als einen Auszug nicht aus diesen beiden Evangelien selbst, sondern aus ihren Quellen ansieht. Johannes ist nicht authentisch. Sicher aber ist, dass Jesus sich fur den Messias hielt und das Reich baldigst erwartete. Seine Lehre ist rabbinisch; alle seine Gedanken fliessen aus dem zeitgenossischen Judentum, dessen Vorstellungswelt wir aus den rabbinischen Schriften rekonstruieren konnon. Denn wenn diese auch erst spater fixiert worden sind, so waren die Grundgedanken doch schon zur Zeit Jesu wirksam. Da sie auf ubernaturliche Ereignisse ging, hatte die messianische Erwartung keinerlei politischen Charakter, und derjenige, der sich als den Messias wusste, konnte nicht auf den Gedanken kommen, sich irdischer Mittel zur Verwirklichung seiner Zwecke zu bedienen, sondern er erwartete alles von der gottlichen Intervention. Damit hat Ghillany das Wesen der Eschatologie vollstandig klar erfasst, so klar wie keiner zuvor.'
