Reference history, hardback. Written just as "Young Adult" literature was beginning, the author, a former NCTE president, first discusses developmental stages in reading, from 8th to 12 grade. Following this chapter is "Subliterature" and how to respond to it, then the Adolescent Novel. He devotes most of the book to accessible adult books but emphasizes seeking out books that appeal to intrinsic interest rather than "worthwhile" material. Deals in a direct way with racism, less so with gender issues. Kind of a silly dustjacket for an interesting look at young adults' reading.
