Hardcover. Zustand: VG+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. See photo condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $2.00 is still present on the front flap. DJ is scuffed and soiled with numerous chips in large tears, the worst being on the lower outside corner of the front where the tear measures several… inches. Black cloth boards underneath are clean with only minor bumping and a small scratch to the red near the lower right corner. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no remainder marks. The only evidence of handwriting found in the book is on the front end page where you can barely see where a price was once penciled in the upper corner and then later erased. Pages are mildly toned due to age but are clean, though the end pages and pastedowns both show foxing. Note: This appears to be a later printing as there is no "first edition" on the copyright page. Rea Irvin (illustrator).

Stapled. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. The November 1934 issue of the American Magazine. It contains most notably, complete in this issue, Point of Death, an abridged version of Fer-de-Lance - the first Nero Wolfe novel. This precedes the book publication and can arguably be asserted to be the "true first edition" of…the Nero Wolfe classic. I'll leave that judgment to the bibliographers & completists. Other articles and fiction include part 2 of 6 of Beauty's Daughter, a novel by Kathleen Norris, part 4 of 6 of The Closed Room, a novel by Clarence Budington Kelland, Fellow Citizens, I Love You, poetry by Ogden Nash, The Corn Planting, an article by Sherwood Anderson, Hero Poison, an article on egos and college football by Paul Gallico, The Next Step in the New Deal, an article by Walter Lippmann, Scattergood, an Interesting People feature of Thomas J Neary, Ruralist, an Interesting People feature of Sherwood Anderson, and others. There are a number of condition issues. The cover is intact but loose from the spine. Light soiling to the covers. Light wear at the top and bottom of the spine. Missing pages as follows - 41/42 (Interesting People - Fencing champs Marion Lloyd & Dorothy Locke, Angler Helen Jepson), 45/46 (Interesting People String Puller Thomas J Neary & Ruralist Sherwood Anderson), 79/80 (ads Campbell's Soup & Camel's) and 89/90 (Ford ad & Tigress in Gingham story by Virgina Paxton). The Stout story is not affected. A flawed copy with a hard to find cornerstone of golden age mystery fiction. Paul Hess (cover photo), Fred Ludekens (Point of Death), Roy Spreter (Beauty's Daughter), George Howe (The Closed Room), Rea Irvin (Fellow Citizens, I Love You), F G Cooper (Hero Poison), Tallburt (The Next Step in the New Deal) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. The title page states that this book was published for Hussies and Homebodies. This fairly uncommon book is written in an archly witty style with many actual drink recipes, often with sarcastic titles like "Why Not Now," "Elephants Sometimes Forget," "Too Good to be True,' and "Mrs. Solo…mon Wears Slacks." The recipes are interspersed with short texts and many of Irvin's stylized and amusing illustrations. Bound in red cloth with titling to the spine and a black and white sketch of a hand holding a martini glass, with "A Vous" written underneath. Cloth is soiled around the edges and with bumped corners and a torn top edge to the spine. Interior pages are generally clean and bright. Includes an index to subjects and drink names. Despite flaws to covers in very good condition. Measures 5.5 x 8 inches. 223 pages.
