Square 4to. 196pp. Tissueguarded portrait frontispiece and 15 further full page steel engraved illustrations, coloured endpapers. Internally very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind, well… held in joints and hinges. Bound in gilt and blue lettered and illustrated brown cloth, featuring blue embossed, scrolled and dentelled vignette upper, gently rubbed to spine not intruding in the least, slightly rolled to corners. Signed twice and with light pencil marginalia by A S Chevasse. Could this be a descendant of Claude Chevasse, a family notable for counting among its ranks two bishops, two Olympic athletes, a knight bachelor and one of only three people to have been awarded the Victoria Cross twice. The latter, Noel Chavasse was brother to Aiden Chavasse who died in action in WWI, and whom I initially thought may have been the owner of the volume in hand, but this would make him only 9 years of age in 1900 when the book was signed, a little young I felt, but perhaps the buyer can trace the true identity of this elusive A S Chevasse, who has evaded my research.
