See images for condition. About the book >.>.> The Microcosm of London began to appear in the spring of 1808. Trafalgar had been won, but the war had a long way t…o go. Napoleon was busy with Spain, almost the last victim on his list. Spain was resisting. In London, people were alarmed and uneasy and crying out for a British offensive. Now, if ever, they declared, was the time to attack??to strike,? as one Londoner put it, ?a bold stroke for the rescue of the world.? Foreign Secretary Canning made the decision. The bold stroke was planned. Arms and supplies were poured into the Peninsula and an expeditionary force prepared. Such was the look of things when, in a London most unhappy about the war, about our too frequent withdrawals, our inability to do anything in time, but a London living an almost normal civilian life under a peaceful sky, the famous picture book of the capital was published. It was published by Rudolph Ackermann at his shop in the Strand, and was eventually completed in twenty-four parts, comprising one hundred col.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. A richly illustrated panorama of Paris, with 204 finely engraved views after Augustus Pugin, accompanied by descriptive topographical text by Ventouillac. In the publisher"s original cloth binding, two volumes bound as one. This copy is undated. Dated here using Jisc, from copies held at various institution…s including The London Library, Victoria and Albert Museum Libraries, and University of Bristol Libraries. A lovely volume consisting of 204 engraved views of Paris, accompanied by descriptive passages. The detailed engravings are the work of Augustus Pugin, an Anglo-French artist, draughtsman and writer on medieval architecture. Whilst Pugin was born in Paris, he left France during the Revolution and spent most of his life in England, thus able to straddle the divide between an insiders and outsiders depiction of the French capitol. The topographical and historical descriptive passages accompanying Pugin's engravings were written by L.T. Ventouillac. In the publisher"s original cloth binding. Externally, a little worn. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to cloth. Spine ends pulled, with slight loss. Splitting to cloth at joints with backstrip slightly lifting with one or two closed tears. Slight rubbing to boards with one or two minor handling marks. Hinges strained with chipping to endpapers at gutter, but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Previous owner"s contemporary ink inscription to verso of frontispiece, dated 1844. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned with the odd spot and handling mark, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Good. Augustus Pugin (illustrator). book.
