Ouvrage scientifique et artistique consacré aux régions méridionales de l'Empire russe, relatant l'expédition menée en 1837 par le prince Anatole de Demidoff, mécène et savant russe établi à Paris. Dirigée sur le terrain par Frédéric Le Play, cette mission associa ingénieurs, naturalistes et artistes, notamment Raffet et Dauzats, pour étudier la géologie, l'industrie, les monuments et les populations de la Crimée, du Caucase et de la steppe du Don. Publiée d'abord en 1840 en grand in-folio, cette édition Bourdin de 1854 en reprend le texte accompagné de nombreuses lithographies réduites d'après les dessins originaux. Anatole de Demidoff (1813-1870), prince de San Donato, était un mécène et voyageur russe établi à Paris. Protecteur des arts et des sciences, il finança plusieurs expéditions savantes et entretint autour de lui un cercle d'artistes et de savants européens, illustrant le cosmopolitisme éclairé de l'aristocratie du XIXᵉ siècle. Carte dépliante rehaussée en couleurs format 73 x 106 cm sous étui cartonné, Ernest Bourdin, Paris, 1855 Cette superbe carte de la Crimée présente également deux petits plans de la bataille de l'Alma (20 septembre 1854) et du "Port de Sevastopol". Ainsi que le précise le texte de l'étui, "cette magnifique carte, la seule complète et sur une aussi grande échelle, est gravée sur acier et coloriée avec le plus grand soin". Il s'agit ici du tirage le plus grand sur papier grand aigle (106 sur 73 cm) ; il existe aussi un tirage plus petit sur papier grand colombier (90 sur 63 centimètres). "Cette carte est pliée dans un étui format du volume de "la Crimée" dont elle est le complément indispensable". La notice fait ici référence à l'édition abrégée au format in-18 du "Voyage dans la Russie Méridionale et la Crimée" du Prince Demidoff, publié par Bourdin en 1855 (Vicaire, III, 169). Contemporary cloth binding with gilt title on spine, 324 pages, colour frontispiece with tissue guard, 82 illustrations, folding map, nice armorial bookplate of Reginald Hepburn Heath, the map has at some time been misfolded, but this has been neatly rectified, very good condition. From the library of naturalist and hunter Malcolm Lyell (1922-2011), who for several decades was managing director and owner of gunmaker Holland and Holland. Lyell notes on the front free endpaper (in pencil): A tale of incredible massacre of sheep, and in the end he does not list the slaughter. One of the most widely respected sheep hunting books ever by one of the best sheep & mountain game hunters ever - thus the usual description of this book. Demidoff was one of the richest persons of his time and doubled for this expedition with St George Littledale, who made his today largely forgotten, quite incredible Asia journeys together with his wife and dog. He has received the pamphlet at the Hotel Bristol, and 'earnestly' believes that 'it will make the right impression upon the powerful of the world'. His party starts the following week for Russia, '& I will take in hands [sic] our plans of delivery as soon as I get on the spot'. He ends with a pious sentiment. Bellows paid two visits to Russia, and counted Tolstoy among his friends. Demidoff was an anglophile, and published in London in 1898 a book titled 'Hunting Trips in the Caucasus', dedicated (by 'Demidoff') to 'English sportsmen'.…
