Jacques Porel (1893-1982), was a friend of Proust and the son of the French actress Madame Rejane and the director of the Odon, Paul Porel. His memoir of his mother includes references to Sarah Bernhardt, Jean Giraudoux, Charlie Chaplin, Paul Valry and other theatrical, literary and influential people of the time. The aesthete Carlos de Beistegui (1895-1970), known by his friends as Charlie, was a fabulously rich and flamboyant character famous for giving the most extravagant and decadent party of the century at the Palazzo Labia in 1951. He was educated at Eton and lived in France, but was Mexican by birth, his wealth originating in the silver mines. He was a patron of Surrealists and architects and designers such asÊLe Corbusier,ÊEmilio TerryÊandÊJean-Michel Franck. Slightly rubbed, otherwise very good. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good.
