Las «Soledades» (1613 c. 1617) pueden y deben considerarse la cima de la poesía barroca, al tiempo que coronan la propuesta del «nuevo estilo» acuñado por Luis de Góngora entre 1612 y 1618. A lo largo de dichos años fueron sucediéndose las «obras mayores» del racionero cordobés: la «Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea» (1…612), las revolucionarias silvas (la segunda de ellas inconclusa), el «Panegírico al duque de Lerma» (1617) y la «Fábula de Píramo y Tisbe» (1618). Frente a los dos epilios (uno serio, otro heroicómico) y la trunca ?laudatio? al valido de Felipe III, las «Soledades» suscitaron una encendida polémica, a causa de la oscuridad y el refinamiento que constituían el sello propio de su peripecia. La aguja de navegar que guía este volumen no es sino esclarecer algunos aspectos de la obscuritas de tan «cosmogónico poema», ahondar en su cercanía estética con el latín imperial, sondear cuatro figuras que destellan con peregrino brío (la metáfora, el símil, la lítote y la alegoría) y escoliar un puñado de pasajes ?tan difíciles como exquisitos? a la luz de la tradición clásica y renacentista.
