"Il Natale del 1833" s'intitola l'ultima lirica del Manzoni, abbozzata quasi di getto sull'onda del dolore causatogli dalla morte della prima moglie e rimasta incompiuta nonostante i ripetuti tentativi per ultimarla. A tale episodio s'ispira questo sorprendente romanzo, in un libero giuoco di verità e d'invenzione, d'utilizzazione di documenti reali e di fonti immaginarie che non dovrebbe trovare impreparati i lettori di Pomilio. Il protagonista, naturalmente, è proprio lui, Manzoni, esplorato nel suo dramma d'uomo e in una "crisi di fede entro la fede" divenuta crisi creativa e preludio al suo silenzio di scrittore. Pomilio, mentre ne ricrea la vicenda con le libertà che sono proprie del romanzo, offrendoci in tal modo un Manzoni più vero, forse, del vero, ne fa in realtà la metafora d'una condizione, quella dell'artista diviso nell'intimo tra sfide poetiche e ritrosie morali fino a mancare un possibile capolavoro. Il tema profondo del libro è però ancora un altro, ed è condensabile in una domanda ineludibile e sempre attuale: "Perché il dolore nel mondo nonostante Dio?". Si tratta ovviamente d'un tema sul quale Pomilio s'interroga dall'interno della sua personale sensibilità religiosa, trasformando il discorso sul Manzoni in un'alta meditazione intorno al mistero della sofferenza e implicitamente intorno a Dio. Romanzo intensissimo e dall'impianto narrativo originalissimo, Il Natale del 1833 è un'ulteriore conferma d'uno dei nostri più significativi scrittori, una prova d'eccezione che idealmente continua l'ormai celebre Quinto evangelio.
