Also includes Frontis Illustration, 18 Portraits, and 50 figures and maps. Derived from an on-line Encyclopedia article by H. C. Darby: Ralph Hall Brown (1898-1948) was American geographer. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1925. In 1929 he moved to the University of Minnesota, where he became a full professor. He produced a continuous series of publications, dealing with various parts of the United States and concerned mainly with historical geography, which he defined as the presentation of "the geography of the past"-the geographical reconstruction of the past, not the study of the influence of geography upon history. His work in reconstructing the past was characterized by the use of a wide variety of original sources, eyewitness accounts, and contemporary maps, published and unpublished. The most outstanding contributions were his two books, Mirror for Americans (1943) and Historical Geography of the United States (1948). Mirror for Americans is an unusual reconstruction of the past geography of an area. Brown carried the idea of making an areal cross section of the past to its logical conclusion. He invented an imaginary author of the early nineteenth century, Thomas P. Keystone, and wrote the book that Keystone might have written in 1810. This book is written in the style of the period, and it is based on writings of the period--writings of visitors from foreign shores who did not hesitate to say frankly what they thought of the new American republic, and writings of men busy helping to build that republic who yet found time to record their ideas and impressions. This work is, in its author's words, "intended as a short cut to an understanding of American geography in 1810". It is compiled from a great variety of sources and is written in the style of the period it portrays. Its author is to be warmly congratulated on his skill and his imagination: the former has produced an admirable account of the historical geography of the eastern seaboard in or about the year 1810; the latter has invented a character, Thomas Pownall Keystone, who tells the story "which he might have written and illustrated" through the medium of Prof. Ralph H. Brown. Professor Brown is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota, and Secretary of the Association of American Geographers. He has written much on the historical geography of the Atlantic seaboard, and his book comes as the result of years of extensive research. Its publication is a valuable addition to the literature dealing with the foundations of the American way of life, and shows clearly problems confronting a nation in the making. Mirror for Americans is a magnificent tour de force and an intellectual exercise that throws light upon some of the problems involved in the creation of the "historic present." It is, moreover, a work of great charm that must delight all who read it. It must have been an extremely difficult task to organize the material for the greater part of a continent into a coherent "historical geography".
