Folio bound in fours, approximately 340 x 230 mm, 13½ x 9¼ inches, woodcut anchor and dolphin device of Aldo Manuzio on title page and on final page, 57 large woodcut historiated initials, 44 woodcut illustrations of which 6 full page and a couple almost full page, leaves: [2], 1-54, [2], first 2 leaves without signatures, collation: A-O4, bound in modern full blind panelled calf, raised bands, blind rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, gilt edges, new endpapers. Occasional pale staining and pale age-browning, early ink manuscript notes concerning measurement on original front endpaper which is dusty and slightly chipped at edges with small repair to top edge, 1 line inscription on title page crossed out in ink, 1 lower corner neatly repaired, just affecting tip of illustration, now carefully restored, small worm track in inner margin from Biii-Diii, neatly repaired, no loss to text or image, another thin track in upper margin from Niv-Oi, affecting top blank margin only, a little pale staining to final leaf. A very good tight clean copy of an important manual of architecture. Pietro Cataneo (d.1569) born in Siena, was a mathmatician, architect and military engineer. This work deals with the design of fortified cities, ecclesiastical and domestic architecture, and building materials. Cataneo saw the design of towns as the task of the architect, emphasizing the importance of geometry in layouts. His work on the design of cities was influential, having been extensively cited by Palladio and elaborated on by Scamozzi and Vasari. His plan for an 'ideal city' is said to have influenced Richard Newcourt's proposal for the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire, as well as the design of cities such as Philadelphia and Savannah. Geometrical diagrams, decorated initials. T-p a bit dusty and frayed at fore-edge, faint waterstain to upper margin in places, little thumbing and marginal spotting, marginal oil stain to few outer corners, extensive slightly later ms. correction and mathematical annotation. A very good copy in contemporary vellum, traces of ties, spine reinforced with C18 patterned paper. Bookplate of Pietro Buoninsegno, Siena, 1802. A most appealing copy of the first edition of this influential treatise on arithmetic and geometry fairly practical and in many respects in advance of its time (Smith, Rara , 242). Pietro Cataneo (1510-74) was a mathematician from Siena with a side interest in architecture. Le pratiche provides fundamental knowledge of arithmetic and geometry for accounting. The first part discusses the four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) including their applications in the counting of currency of different value and weight as well as applied problems based on real life e.g., the three jealous husbands who want to cross a river with their wives on a boat which can only hold two people at a time. The second is concerned with basic geometry, with a thorough examination of geometrical triangulation applied to measuring and subdividing allotments. The Florentine influence of his background surfaces in the choice of the word biricuocolo to mean multiplication (Smith, Rara , 242). The slightly later annotator of this copy wrote on the final blank the procedure to extract the square and cube root of specific numbers. He also highlighted sections concerning gold and silver e.g., calculating the number of carats before and after refinery, and the proportion of precious metals in alloys. He was probably a teacher. For a couple of sections on the calculation of the quantity of wool as compared to the bags to transport it, the quantity of silver in coins and the payment of house rents he added his own alternative method, calling it better or clearer for beginners . In another, on fractional subtraction, he said it seemed to him that the author had not considered the issue of what are known today as continued fractions , a study of which did not appear in print until 1579. Rare first edition of a beautifully produced treatise on architecture and perspectival design, published by the sons of Aldus Manutius at Venice, and beautifully illustrated with large woodcuts. The work is dedicated to Enea Piccolomini, and treats in four books the architecture of towns and their locations, building materials, the ground-plans and elevations for churches, palaces and houses, designing in perspective, etc. The woodcut illustrations, including many full-page and nearly full-page plans and perspectival designs, depict cruciform and centrally-planned churches, ground plans for private houses and palazzi, and plans for fortifications.Pietro Cataneo (died 1569) was an architect in Siena, where he built the Palazzo Franceschini and other important buildings in the Republic of Siena. In importance, his architectural treatise comes directly after those of the "big five": Alberti, Serlio, Vignola, Palladio, and Scamozzi. The work is very well produced, printed in a fine Roman type with some marginal notes in small Italics, and adorned with beautiful historiated woodcut initials, coming from a richly designed woodcut alphabet with mythological subjects. The present work was republished in 1567, with use of the same woodcuts, but enlarged with four more books.With a later ownership annotation and a hand drawn cross on the title page, several later annotations and underlinings in the margins. The vellum is somewhat stained, the spine is rubbed, with some loss of material. The leaves are occasionally (water)stained, and partly uncut, resulting in wide margins.
