Pieter Boddaert Jr. werd in oktober 1766 geboren te Utrecht als zoon van een vooraanstaande familie. Na zijn gymnasiale opleiding schreef hij zich in aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, waar hij rechten studeerde. Zijn intellectuele vorming stond in het teken van de klassieke geleerdheid, maar al vroeg ontwikkelde hij een voorliefde voor de dichtkunst. Na zijn studie vestigde Boddaert zich als advocaat in Amsterdam, waar hij in de literaire en maatschappelijke kringen van de late achttiende eeuw actief deelnam. Hoewel Boddaert tot de gegoede burgerij behoorde, stond zijn literaire productie in schril contrast met de morele ernst die doorgaans met zijn stand werd geassocieerd. Het leven van Boddaert eindigde tragisch en voortijdig. Op 9 maart 1805 overleed hij te Amsterdam na een ongeval: bij een val van een grachtmuur op het bevroren water brak hij een been, waaraan hij bezweek.
