Deze publicatie verscheen werd ingezonden voor de eerste editie van de wedstrijd "KUNST-BOEK+BAND 2000". Hier werd gekozen voor een 1-katernbinding. Pieter Boddaert Jr. (1766-1805): Leven en werk. Pieter Boddaert Jr. werd in oktober 1766 geboren te Utrecht als zoon van een vooraanstaande familie. Na zijn gymnasiale opleiding schreef hij zich in aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, waar hij rechten studeerde. Zijn intellectuele vorming stond in het teken van de klassieke geleerdheid, maar al vroeg ontwikkelde hij een voorliefde voor de dichtkunst. Na zijn studie vestigde Boddaert zich als advocaat in Amsterdam, waar hij in de literaire en maatschappelijke kringen van de late achttiende eeuw actief deelnam. Hoewel Boddaert tot de gegoede burgerij behoorde, stond zijn literaire productie in schril contrast met de morele ernst die doorgaans met zijn stand werd geassocieerd. Zijn oeuvre omvat onder meer de bundel Gedichten uit de Gevangenis (1792) en de postuum verschenen Nagelatene poëtische en prozaïsche portefeuille (1805). Deze werken tonen een schrijver die zich weinig gelegen liet liggen aan conventionele zedelijkheid. Zijn poëzie werd gekenmerkt door een uitgesproken erotisch en speels karakter, dat hem in de literatuurgeschiedenis de bijnaam ?de vieze Boddaert? heeft opgeleverd. Zijn libertijnse poëzie weerspiegelde bovendien een bredere maatschappelijke en culturele dynamiek van de patriottentijd en de vroege Bataafse Republiek, waarin gevestigde normen en machtsverhoudingen ter discussie werden gesteld. Het leven van Boddaert eindigde tragisch en voortijdig. Op 9 maart 1805 overleed hij te Amsterdam na een ongeval: bij een val van een grachtmuur op het bevroren water brak hij een been, waaraan hij bezweek. Zijn vroege dood versterkte de mythevorming rond zijn persoon en oeuvre. In de literaire traditie neemt Pieter Boddaert Jr. een marginale maar intrigerende positie in. Hij behoort niet tot de canon van de Nederlandse letterkunde, maar zijn werk wordt vaak genoemd als voorbeeld van de schaduwzijde van de achttiende-eeuwse poëzie: de uitbundige, zinnelijke en satirische verzen die contrasteerden met de burgerlijke moraal. Daarmee vormt Boddaert een belangrijke stem in het bredere spectrum van de Nederlandse literatuur aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw.

(1766-1805). Deze vijfde editie is gezegend met een aanvulling: 'Gedichten uit de gevangenis' (anoniem door Boddaert uitgegeven in 1792), waarover de bezorger van deze editie in het voorwoord schrijft: 'Een exemplaar van dit hoogst zeldzaam werkje kocht ik op de veiling der boekerij Meulman'. Ook is deze vijfde (en laatste) druk aangevuld met Boddaerts in 1791 verschenen vertaling van 'The rape of the Lock' van Alexander Pope. Uitgegeven door de Nieuwe Boekhandel, Nes A 324: deze gaf ook het satirische tijdschrift Asmodée uit. De Nieuwe Boekhandel werd gedreven door de journalist Mr. Antoine Adolphe Thierry Visscher (1819-1881) onder het pseudoniem A. van Brussel.
