Ce "Miroir des princes" médiéval a été rédigé vers 1085 par l?archevêque de Bulgarie à l?intention de son élève, le futur co-empereur byzantin Constantin Doukas, fils de l?empereur Michel VII. Le texte, conservé en grec, est publié ici pour la première fois, accompagné d?une traduction latine due au jésuite et érudit français Pierre Poussines (1609-1686), déjà connu pour avoir fait connaître en Occident plusieurs auteurs byzantins, notamment Anne Comnène. Poussines dédie cette édition bilingue au jeune Louis XIV, alors âgé de treize ans, suggérant symboliquement une continuité idéale des modèles princiers, « afin que, de Constantin, nous parvenions à Louis ». L?ouvrage se compose d?une première partie, panégyrique, célébrant la vie et les vertus de Constantin, suivie d?une seconde, beaucoup plus développée, véritable manuel d?éducation politique du prince. En une trentaine de chapitres sont abordés l?usage légitime de l?autorité, les vertus souveraines, les traits du tyran, les bienfaits d?un règne juste, la distinction entre amis sincères et flatteurs, la comparaison de l?État avec un navire, ainsi que l?organisation des forces morales et militaires du pouvoir. Apart from some minor browning at some leaves nice copies. Francesco Sacchini ( Paciano - Perugia 1570 - Roma 1625) compiled a chronological study on the history of the Jesuit Order in five parts (Pars Prima - Pars Quinta). The Pars Prima was first published in Rome in 1614, the Pars Secunda in Antwerp in 1620. We have here the '' Pars Quinta Tomus Prior et Posterior'' complete in two volumes in first edition. This fifth volume (first part) covers the period 1581-1590. During this period Claudio Aquaviva became head of the order and the Jesuits set up their mission in China with Matteo Ricci. The volume is fully indexed. This fifth volume is edited by Pierre Poussines (1609-1686), a French Jesuit called to Rome in 1654 to continu the work of Sacchini who had died already in 1625.
