Folio. Two vols in 1. first edition of the second part by Sacchini; the first part, by Orlandini, was first published in 1614. These first two parts cover the history of the Jesuits until 1564; a further three parts were published later.With engraved title showing Ignatius and early members of the order. Carved woodcarving printer's mark at the end of part 1. There is a small library stamp to the title page for "Bibliotheca Historica A. Hamy." There is an ink annotation to the bottom edge of the title page dated 1657. (It would suggest that this volume was owned by a Franciscan monastery in France). Another stamp to the first leaf for "Collegium Angiense Societis Jesus" (Jesuits founded schools established on the principles of Ignatius and called them Collegium). Period (possibly contemporary) full leather. Six raised bands to the spine. Gilt titles and decorations to the spine. The binding is a little rubbed to the edges, with cracking to the spine edges, with loss of leather cover to the spine edges. The contents of the book are in excellent condition, with a few foxing spots only. The first comprehensive history of the Society of Jesus and at the same time one of the most important works on the history of the missions, especially in the East Asian region. The second edition of Orlandini's monumental history of the Society of Jesus, first published in Rome earlier in the same year, 1615. According to Streit, this work has remained, even into the modern era, the most important record of the early history of the Jesuits. Arranged in sixteen books, it includes biographies of the early Jesuits and detailed accounts of their missions in India, Japan, the East Indies and the Americas, up to the death of Ignatius. The Historia was augmented in further editions after 1620, Sacchini extending the chronology up to 1590 and later writers to 1632. Nicolo Orlandini (1553-1606) taught rhetoric and composition in Jesuit colleges in both Naples and Rome, and was one of a group of academics responsible for ensuring that the teaching of the humanities became integral to the Jesuit pedagogical vision. This fifth volume (first part) covers the period 1581-1590. During this period Claudio Aquaviva became head of the order and the Jesuits set up their mission in China with Matteo Ricci. The volume is fully indexed. This fifth volume is edited by Pierre Poussines (1609-1686), a French Jesuit called to Rome in 1654 to continu the work of Sacchini who had died already in 1625. Neben der fachlichen u. religiöse Ausbildung der Lehrer war die Entwicklung der Persönlichkeit ebenso wichtig.Sacchini, der nach eigener Unterrichtstätigkeit lange Jahre Sekretär des Ordensgenerals Mutius Vitelleschi war, ergänzt die Anforderungen aus der »ratio studiorum«, die vor allem die religiöse und wissenschaftliche Qualifikation des Lehrers betont hatte: »Doch auch diese gründliche Kenntnis des Stoffes genügt noch nicht; es muß sich zu ihr die Erfahrung in der Lehrweise gesellen. Letztere ist eine eigentliche Wissenschaft und setzt große geistige Gewandtheit voraus; ja sie ist für die Schule von solcher Bedeutung, daß nicht selten ein wissenschaftlich weniger gebildeter Mann ein vorzüglicherer Lehrer ist, eben weil er diese Lehrmethode besser versteht.« Diese Lehrmethode besteht aber nicht in einer ausgefeilten Didaktik, wie sie die »ratio studiorum« mit ihren arbeitstechnischen Anweisungen für die einzelnen Gymnasialklassen durchaus kannte. Die Methode ist vielmehr eine pädagogische, die als solche in der »ratio« zu kurz kommt. Der Lehrer hat sein Amt als göttliche Aufgabe zu verstehen, sich selbst gegenüber dem Schüler zurückzunehmen und sich bei dem Gelingen seines Wirkens letztlich auf Gott als seinen Garanten zu verlassen, denn: »Nicht der begießt, ist etwas, noch der pflanzt, sondern derjenige, welcher Wachstum verleiht, nämlich Gott.«Sacchini war sich der Wichtigkeit der Hochachtung vor der Persönlichkeit des Schülers, die zugleich Motivation für den Unterricht sein soll, zutiefst bewusst.
