159 pages, 153 large color photographs--mostly full-page, 1 double-page map. Cloth cover. This is a wonderful pictorial essay on PNG ceremonies, decoration, dances and dancers. Divided into three sections--the Coastal Region, the Highlands, the Sepik--each with superb color photographs, this book documents body decoration, facial makeup, headdresses, ornaments, and masks. Though there have been numerous books illustrating PNG ceremonies in the mid and late 20th century, virtually none can rival this volume in the breadth of its subject matter and the superb quality of its color photographs. REDUCED FROM $70.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. First edition. SIGNED BY PHIL RICKMAN ON THE TITLE PAGE. Hardcover. 102 pp with bibliography and photographs. With its uniquely authentic blend of crime and the paranormal, Phil Rickman's addictive Merrily Watkins series about the diocesan exorcist for Hereford has virtually established a new fictional genre. The setting of these novels are actual locations along the Welsh Border, with real history--recent and ancient--and indigenous folklore. Revealing the sources and the inspiration, this book takes readers, for the first time, on a tour of of these places, graced by the color and black and white photographs of John Mason and descriptive text by Phil Rickman of his own ramble around them. A very uncommon book.

French language edition. 12mo., binder's endpaper and blank, half- title, title/editorial notice, [1p.], ii-xii, [1p.], pp-14-136, [1p.], pp-2-4, publisher's list No. 3 of Ouvrages Nouveaux , rebound into late nineteenth century half brown, grained morocco, 5 raised bands on spine with gilt titles, marbled paper covered boards, marbled endpapers, integral silk bookmark, top edge gilt, a cutting from a dealer's? catalogue on the front free endpaper, French text. Paris, chez Mercier, Imprimeur-Libraire, 1796. £375.00 Spine a bit rubbed and scratched, endemically browned text, a washed out stain on half-title, uncut lower edges with a few corners lost on sporadic pages. Rare in both commerce and institution with two copies only on WorldCat, both in France with one at the BnF. Gay 1314. Not in Monglond. A translation of the English first edition entitled 'A Modest Defence of Public Stews ' is attributed at various times to Bernard de Mandeville but also to George Ogle.TheLatin text entitled ?AdBriandum Vallium . Pro Lena Apologia' , is essentially an elegy to brothel Madams and is inserted at the end of the book. The dedication in the original book was in the name of Phil-Porney and not Phil-Pornix as with the book in hand. The main point of the Apologia was to argue that 'public whoring . will not only prevent most of the ill consequences of this Vice, but even lessen the Quantity of Whoring in general and reduce it to the narrowest-Bounds which it can possibly be contain'd in.' (p-122 Mandeville quoted in Irwin Primer - Bernard Mandeville's 'A Modest Defence of Publick Stews': Prostitution and Its Discontents in Early Georgian England, 2006). The book is (quoting the clipping pasted in) ' one of the very rare books'' produced by Claude- Franc?ois-Xavier Mercier, called 'Mercier de Compie?gne' who was quite prolific during the French Revolution and published many works of a licentious nature. Catalogue no. 3 includes titles at the press including Le Plaisir du comte d'Estaing published in the same year as the volume under discussion. In his notice, Mercier argues that the England of 1727, when the book was first published, is not so different to public sexual life under the Directoire. 219563.
