He is enclosing a letter from 'Dr Braun in Rome', and suggests that Smyth will be able to correct the translation. 'I am sorry Dr Braun is not more successful, but he has zeal in the Cause, & will not lose an opportunity.' TWO: 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with remains of mount on blank page. A letter of condolence on the death of Smyth's tenth child, Caroline Mary Smyth (1834-1859). Northumberland has refrained from writing while the death was 'a fresh wound', 'for I know that no human condolence could give you any solace to your grief'. His wife, who shares in his sentiments, thanks Mrs Smyth [ Eliza Anne Warington, the bluestocking 'Annarella' (1788-1873) ] for sending her a sermon, 'as it was an assurance of a kindly feeling, & of mutual sincere condolence'. The letter ends with news of a visit to Alnwick by Doctor Lee and his wife.

X,338 pp. First edition. - Account of the author's third expedition into the highlands of Asiatic Turkey, undertaken in Turkey in 1899. This book 'was inspired by his sympathy for Turks, but also by a deepened sense of evils of Hamidism, whose downfall he foreshaw' (DNB p.104).

First Edition. full leather binding with gold gilt titles. the page edges are also gold gilt. book plate of Hugh Beverley of Christ Church Oxford under the front board. rather interestingly there is an inscription opposite the title page, in what appears to be an 18th century hand " a copy of this book sold at an auction in 1776 for 6.16 pounds" . there are no other inscriptions. there are age related marks and imperfections but the binding is good. the boards are rather worn. small repairs tear to the top of the spine. there is a lovely fore-edge painting of a town scene with pedestrians, buildings and a horse hidden in the fore-edge gilt. First edition of Lord Warkworth's travel accounts of his journey through Anatolia. He is better known as Henry Algernon George Percy, Earl Percy (1871-1909), a British conservative politician, who held office as under-secretary of state for India and under-secretary of state for foreign affairs. He was the eldest son of Henry Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland (1846-1918), but he never succeeded his father due to his early death in 1909. Earl Percy was also known as Lord Percy or - until 1899 - as Lord Warkworth; he wrote and published the present work under the latter name.Percy first visited parts of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, shortly after his election to Parliament in 1895, he returned in 1897 and wrote the present book on his return to England. In the present book he not only gives detailed descriptions of the places he visits while travelling - from Constantinople through northern Turkey to Mosul, Aleppo and on his return to the west - but also speaks out about the Armenian question (in favour of the Turks!: was he aware of the extent of the massacres in the years 1894-1896?) and an alliance between Britain and Turkey against the Russians.
