FIRST LIMITED & ONLY NUMBERED EDITION . *** **** *** . . . . . . * This being number 71 of 150 prints. * This is Jacoulet's FIRST print, and the print That launched his artistic career. It is also the first print in a projected flower series which included eight other prints. * The mica background is flawless & magnificent. Other printers who tried this delicate technique later saw this mica chip and flaked off. However, Jacoulet's master printer Ushibara expertly applied mica with such skill and produced a flawless example. * OUR COPY: Our copy is the FIRST PRINTING, of which 150 impressions were done, and is distinguished by the "two frown" lines found on the woman's forehead. Per Miles p.89, "this is omitted in the second edition." . This very RARE print is signed in pencil "Paul Jacoulet" then "Fan" sealed with his cinnabar chop [Hanko]. The paper is watermarked "PJ" in the lower left corner. Miles has also pointed out on p.128 that: "The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936. Since many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, several of them are among the rarest & most desirable of all the artist's oeuvre." . Then Miles then cites a list of these "most desirable" prints, and begins with this print as number one on that list ! The sparkle of the crushed mica is truly beautiful and represents a high-water mark in Japanese woodblock hand-printing technique. Truly lovely as the day it was published. Framed and glazed. DEPICTIONING A KOREAN ARTISAN . * This stunning example depicts a Korean artisan painting a Korean celadon. Note the gaufrage that indicates the paint level in his bowl and the raised decorations on the pot, made with an additional block. Sealed with Jacoulet's red butterfly cinnabar Hanko [seal] just below his pencil signature. . The paper also has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published on 22 September, 1940. THIS BEING NUMBER 102 . . * There is a note in Miles, see below for the true total printed, which is 150, not the full 'intended' number of 350 copies. . Note the design function of the Korean pottery as a balance to the simplified forms, and the golden mica upper background. It should be noted, that prints with large areas of crushed mica are prone to peeling or chipping. In this case, the mica is very stable and solid. . Chenille Verte, [Green Caterpillar] with its heavily impressed gauffrage [embossing], uses negative space in a wa that influenced some of the Sosaku Hanga in their most abstract studies of the thirties and early forties. . Sealed with the good luck hammer in cinnabar, just below Jacoulet's pencil signature. The paper has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published 24 November, 1936.
