Japan 1934, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size ca. 35 x 46 cm.,print size ca. 30 x 39.5 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Yamagishi, printed by Ushibara. FIRST LIMITED & ONLY NUMBERED EDITION . *** **** *** . . . . . . * This being number 71 of 150 prints. * This is Jacoulet's FIRST print, and the print That launched his artistic career. It is also the first print in a projected flower series which included eight other prints. * The mica background is flawless & magnificent. Other printers who tried this delicate technique later saw this mica chip and flaked off. However, Jacoulet's master printer Ushibara expertly applied mica with such skill and produced a flawless example. * OUR COPY: Our copy is the FIRST PRINTING, of which 150 impressions were done, and is distinguished by the "two frown" lines found on the woman's forehead. Per Miles p.89, "this is omitted in the second edition." . This very RARE print is signed in pencil "Paul Jacoulet" then "Fan" sealed with his cinnabar chop [Hanko]. The paper is watermarked "PJ" in the lower left corner. Miles has also pointed out on p.128 that: "The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936. Since many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, several of them are among the rarest & most desirable of all the artist's oeuvre." . Then Miles then cites a list of these "most desirable" prints, and begins with this print as number one on that list ! See Miles below. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: There is a bit of toning to the margin, otherwise, a flawless example. The sparkle of the crushed mica is truly beautiful and represents a high-water mark in Japanese woodblock hand-printing technique. Truly lovely as the day it was published. Framed and glazed. We have posted two color photos of this to our home page: the first under "cover" is a digital photo of this print; the second is the color frontispiece from Miles under "illustration 1." * A copy recently sold at auction for $1800. . *** REFERENCE: R. Miles; THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as the color frontispiece and again on p.41, as item number 1, descriptive text on p.89. . Per Miles: "Jacoulet's first print was made from his favorite South Seas watercolor. The original depicted a far more worn and prematurely aged creature than did either of the editions. The paler coloring and introspective expression of the first impression gave way to crisper, brighter colors under Jacoulet's direct supervision. There is a rich silver mica background." . *.
Japan 1940, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size 35 x 46 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Maeda, printed by Honda, Uchikawa & Ogawa. * * FIRST & ONLY LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 150 COPIES * * . *** **** *** . . A RARE EXAMPLE HAND NUMBERED & SIGNED BY JACOULET . . . ISSUED IN GRAND DELUXE SIZE . . . FIRST & ONLY EDITION . . . EXECUTED BY THE FAMOUS FRENCH SHIN-HANGA ARTIST . . . DEPICTIONING A KOREAN ARTISAN . * This stunning example depicts a Korean artisan painting a Korean celadon. Note the gaufrage that indicates the paint level in his bowl and the raised decorations on the pot, made with an additional block. Sealed with Jacoulet's red butterfly cinnabar Hanko [seal] just below his pencil signature. . The paper also has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published on 22 September, 1940. The print is a very strong example. There is some minor typical marginal toning, without any other issues. Nicely framed & glazed, ready for . A RARE example, seldom found. . *** REFERECE . R. Miles: THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as #69, descriptive text on page 105. Per Miles, he stated that the edition of 150 were fully printed, intended edition of 350 but fewer than 150 impressions were actually done. His comment: "This is the finest, of Jacoulet's Korean series. .winch he never offered." Critics consider these are the finest print of all the artist's color woodblock prints." . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *.

Japan 1936, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size ca. 35 x 46.5 cm., print size ca.30 x 39 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Maeda, printed by Uchikawa, Fujii & Ogawa. FIRST LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION . *** . . FIRST & ONLY LIMITED, HAND NUMBERED EDTION OF 350 COPIES . . THIS BEING NUMBER 102 . . * There is a note in Miles, see below for the true total printed, which is 150, not the full 'intended' number of 350 copies. . Note the design function of the Korean pottery as a balance to the simplified forms, and the golden mica upper background. It should be noted, that prints with large areas of crushed mica are prone to peeling or chipping. In this case, the mica is very stable and solid. . Chenille Verte, [Green Caterpillar] with its heavily impressed gauffrage [embossing], uses negative space in a wa that influenced some of the Sosaku Hanga in their most abstract studies of the thirties and early forties. . Sealed with the good luck hammer in cinnabar, just below Jacoulet's pencil signature. The paper has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published 24 November, 1936. The print is basically a very nice copy with some usual marginal toning and without any other flaws to mention. Framed and glazed. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCE: . R. Miles: THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as #40, the descriptive text is on p.97. Per Miles, he stated: "The edition of 150 fully printed," fewer than 75 impressions, the intended edition of 350 but fewer than 275 were actually printed. . The model in this print also appears in #119, a Korean wearing a horsehair hat and smoking a pipe, one of the archetypes of Jacoulet, who often used the same models dressed in various guises. . *** A copy recently sold at auction for $2300. ***.
